You know one of the sweetest things I noticed about Heath and when he had a woman companion was that he loved to hold their hands. I just loved that.

On January 22, Friday, I went to Shekhar Kapur's blog to see if he had posted anything this year about Heath. And at the time I was there, he hadn't yet, so I put my comment at last year's anniversary date of Heath's passing:

Two years ago this date we lost you to immortality. The hurt is no less today.

Tonight, I thought I would check back at his blog - at 3:55 a.m. - I know it's late, but I just did something that was...well, a difficult for me...I played keyboard and sang in front of a full house...only two songs, but still, it is probably the one thing in my life I have put off doing until very late in my life, because it frightens me so much, but I want to do it. I just get stage fright when singing. Most everyone else had other people on stage with them. That would have been so much easier than going solo. But yesterday and today, I tried to give myself focus with little thoughts to get me where I needed to be. Trying to have fun, even if I couldn't be perfect - was one of the many thoughts I wrote down on an index card.

And I thought of my Spirit Guide....I'll just leave that at that for now. And I thought of my dad and Heath. My dad and Heath are in their spirit states and hopefully have met each other there. My dad liked to hear me sing. That is what I did on the phone many miles away from him and when I finished singing the song, he took his last breath. My voice was the last thing he heard and I was singing one of his favorite hymns to him. I have written about this before in a few posts.

I couldn't mourn Heath on his two year anniversary too much, because I had this creative thing to focus on. And probably Heath would be okay with me opting to do a creative thing as opposed to sitting around moping. So I lit candles last night for me to get support in my efforts to sing, for Dad to listen tonight to me singing, for Heath, for my son and for the Darfuris.

Well, anyway, Shekhar did have this post up when I checked tonight. Here it is:

Heath Ledger, have two years passed?

January 22, 2010, 6:47 p.m.

It's 5.20 am and am struggling to sleep in my hotel room in San Hose. Jet lag ? No, something else is nagging me - and then it comes like a bolt, a sudden sharp, almost physical feeling of sadness. It Heath's 2nd Anniversary of his passing.

For those that know this blog, will know of my special relationship with Heath. Well, that survives time. Even through the sadness and heavy heart I sense him laughing and smiling almost looking down and saying "Get on with it, Mate !"

Lots of other things come to mind. What do two years mean ? What does passing of time mean ? How little or more have I achieved in the last two years. How productive have I been - and all this on context of Heath's passing as if time stopped there and started again ? Is what you have done, or what has happened, or the events that have taken place since the only measure of time ? Or is there something far more eternal about time ?

Tonight I am going to LA and having dinner with Orando Bloom. The last time we met was in Heath's friend's pad in Melbourne, where Heath was proudly showing a rough cut of Four Feathers to all his friends. So proud was he of his performance in a film that actually did very little at the box office.

So I am just going to look up at Heath's smiling face and say "Hey, Mate ! We are still down here trying undersatnd it all" Trying to imitate his broad Australian drawl.

Replace worrying about what might go wrong with thoughts:
Let it happen. Accept that it's a in-the-moment-thing. Can't control it. Muscle memory will kick in. Let the music in and and it will come out. Peace came with all this in last weekend's performance.

Why be afraid of them? They only want what you know is inside you, what you have to give. Your destiny is to be who you are. Not to withhold it..right? If not the "whole" - just a glimpse of it. Music - let it guide you; let the music use you; listen to each note, rhythm. You're going to make mistakes anyway, so make them while relaxed and having fun and breathing. SURRENDER. Relax, Spirit is with you. Help me with my destiny. If this is my calling, help me relax, have peace in the doing, in the being. Help me relax in the music.

I just trotted over to the candle site to light today's candle and as I was writing a message I started crying and sobbing. How could he just stop like that? How could someone so full of life and generosity and wisdom and sweetness just cease to be? I don't cry as much as I used to, but when I do it's still with the same sad puzzlement and loss.

My response

Ahh, M......I want to thank you for letting me know what your signature is about. I have been lighting candles for several things and people. And my first candle that I lit for Heath has burned out, so I just followed your lead and lit another for him just now.

Today, I had my 19 year old neighbor girl help me out and she ended up staying the entire afternoon with me at the coffee house where I was singing...when we returned home her family wasn't home and so I brought her back to the house and we shared a pizza and I introduced her to Heath....first on some of my youtube tributes and then I put in the Sweet Bridget episode of Roar. At first sight of Heath on the tv screen, she said "he is cute! - the one behind." I said, yes he is....then she had to listen to me talk about Heath. Explaining he is gone...what happened...that he is the same one I had just showed her on my The Four Feathers youtube tribute and Ten Things I Hate About You . I told her "Maybe, you would like to go to the movie Dr Parnassus with me". She agreed. She loved Sweet Bridget.

When we had walked in the door this evening, I played back a message on my answer machine - so she and I listened together. It was Richard from Avon Cinema, which I had called a couple of weeks ago now to inquire when exactly The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnasssus was coming to Providence, Rhode Island. He called to tell me....it is tentatively scheduled to open January 8, 2010, but told me to "call that week or day of - to see if it does show up".

Just a Heath experience....that I shared with someone who never knew of him...and now she does. I even took her over to the candle page for Darfur I had created....she loved it there.

So, we pass on who we are and share the things and lovely people who touch us. In that way it is a beautiful world.

I just love sharing. And hope you understand the joy that it brings to me to share about Heath, whether it be with Krista, my young neighbor girl, or you at the forum or on my blog, where I so often do.

This is a comment I left there a while back:

Some are born with a gift to shine a light for the rest of us to touch, connect to and receive their radiant beauty. Heath was one.

I love The Four Feathers...I just discovered it recently. I am moved by it and specially so by Heath in it.

"...And these for whom life has no repose, live at times in their rare moments of happiness with such strength and indescribable beauty, the spray of their moment's happiness is flung so high and dazzingly over the wide sea of suffering, that the light of it, spreading its radiance, touches others too with its enchantment..." Hemann Hesse STEPPENWOLF I love this quote and use it as a tribute to those like Heath who transcend the average and lift us up where our souls belong.

Some can move us for all time in just moments. Heath is one. In vital ways, he remains with us. A gift from Life and for our souls. Enriched by seeing in him, our own selves. We are all just a part of the whole of Life. Something about what Heath was able to present turned on a vibrancy in our own inner glow and light. He makes me feel more alive still. Sadness is there, too. But death doesn't end our feelings or relationships with those whose mortal bodies no longer inhale and exhale.

We are blessed by having lived when Heath was here.

Thank you, Shekhar for bringing us The Four Feathers. It stays with me. And in this transient world, that is an act of grace. I am grateful for the arts. For in them we humans can radiate and share our best selves.

It is lovely to share here and read the hearts speaking by all who have taken the time to write.

Message #1

For me, shows like today....on girls, women, rape, the Darfur genocide...are some of few types of topics that I feel the Oprah show does the best and are the most helpful for us to make the world a better place. So, a big heartfelt "Thank You!!"

As someone who has worked as one of those "grass roots" community organizers to end the Darfur genocide - since 2004, I agree with Nicholas D. Kristof and his wife, Sheryl WuDunn, that the media and our world's free nations' leaders have failed in bringing attention and focusing on such vital human disaster stories.

If we had the Darfur story in our faces more consistently - maybe it wouldn't be so easy for our leaders to put it on the back burner of priorities. They simply won't act unless we - the people - say to them loudly, clearly and consistently that Genocide Will Stop With Us. Allowing genocide is a defining issue and I don't want to be defined by allowing the perpetrators to go on doing their crimes without accountability by us, humans who claim we have high values.

So, again “Thank You” for this vital and needed show.

Besides types of shows like today’s which bring much-needed attention to worldwide discrimination of women, rape as a weapon of war, the nearly 7 year genocide on the Darfuri people, etc., I especially am grateful for shows that are positive and show human nature at its best in simply illuminating ways. I will never forget the young beautiful woman who was disfurgured, is cared for by her father, from South America, I believe and only allows herself a daily brief "feeling sorry" for herself. She is the most memorable guest for me personally. I will miss Oprah show contributions like these when the show ends. How sad for us, for women, girls and the world. BUT I am grateful for all that you have done and continue to do to make the world a better place.

"The hair show" for me was interesting, but not so important at the end of the day. I am 60, white and never colored my hair. And luckily still have my natural hair color. Red.

Okay this next one.... somewhat contradicts the thoughts above, but I had no room to explain myself in the character-limited space on Oprah's website. I wanted to add the following as a preface to this next comment that I left:

Having said that I especially like the shows that bring attention to issues that are much neglected by the media...I have a request about something not so important at the end of the day....Please, consider doing a show on Heath ....Ledger, that is.

There are a lot (Johanna's Channel) of us around the world who mysteriously find ourselves with a bond to the late actor Heath Ledger. And for many of us, we found his work after he died January 22, 2008. We meet at youtube on our little video tributes to Heath, at director Shekhar Kapur's blog posts about Heath (Mr.Kapur directed Heath in the WONDERful, overlooked movie The Four Feathers). We become friends, share emails that are very soulful, family photos - friends from countries where we resort to google translator to be able to pour out our hearts in native languages. It is a wondefrul experience meeting "spiritual soul mates" from around the planet and share our feelings that only we can say to another "Heathen". Thus, Heath Ledger, the actor, continues to inspire by his work that is still with us. Though he is gone, he remainis the catalyst for these connections.

His final movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is opening in Europe in different countries ongoing. We may ONLY see it in the USA in NYC and LA.There is a support site where we hope to spread the word that we want to see it in our local theatres. It is our last chance to see Heath after the Joker role in The Dark Knight.

Reuters: Millions Could Miss Sudan Elections-Observers. Millions of voters could be left out of Sudan's first elections in 24 years because of a failure of authorities to persuade more people to register for the poll, international observers said on Tuesday. The Carter Centre urged Sudan's National Elections Commission (NEC) to increase publicity and funding for teams signing up voters across Africa's largest country, saying current figures showed most states might miss registration targets. It said there were concerns over the turnout for registration in western Darfur territory as well as the east, south and the central Kordofan regions. Registration was due to end after a 30-day period on November 30 but was extended for one week following concerns about low turnout and public awareness. The presence of government intelligence agents at registration centres in Darfur might intimidate voters there, it said.

Reuters: U.S. Blasts Sudan Over Darfur Peacekeeper Harassment. The U.S. envoy to the United Nations sharply criticized Khartoum Monday over a U.N. report that accused the Sudanese army of harassing and threatening international peacekeepers in Darfur. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in his latest report on the U.N.-African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur, known as UNAMID, that limits on the freedom of movement of UNAMID personnel violated an agreement with Khartoum on their deployment and made it difficult to protect civilians. "The United States is particularly concerned about ... the secretary-general's report of some 42 instances in which UNAMID personnel and patrols have been denied freedom of movement and access," U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice told reporters after a meeting of the Security Council on Sudan. "It impedes UNAMID's ability to protect civilians and do its vital work. It is utterly unacceptable, as are the threats by the government of Sudan against UNAMID."

Sudan Tribune: Peace mediator calls for truce in Darfur. The Joint Chief Mediator for Darfur peace process urged today all the parties to the six-year conflict to agree to a cessation of hostilities and to work for the improvement of security on the ground. Mr Djibrill Bassole, briefed on Monday the United Nation Security Council about the state of the "Darfur peace process and the Doha peace talks, as well as the short and medium term vision of the Mediation." The Joint African Union United Nations Chief Mediator for Darfur, in his update about the peace process to the 15 members of the UN Security Council, urged the Sudanese government and rebel groups to engage a cessation of hostilities in order to build confidence between the warring parties but also to improve the security and the humanitarian situations. Bassole stressed in his remarks that the current lack of confidence between the parties "makes for slow progress in the peace talks and for an end to military hostilities."

Institute for War and Peace Reporting: Land Rights Confusion Hinders Darfur IDP Returns. As pressure mounts to send IDPs home, little is being said about the crucial issue of land rights. IDPs would like to leave the camps and return to their former villages, once the situation improves, but fear that they no longer have land to go back to. Nor are they confident the government will ensure they return safely or protect them once they return. The dispute over land rights in Darfur has long fanned the flames of the conflict, which broke out in 2003, and many observers are baffled by the international community's apparent reluctance to do anything to address the problem. Since land ownership is such an integral part of the conflict in Darfur, many believe that, unless steps are taken to address the problem, it will be difficult to achieve a lasting peace in the region.

This is the video I started days ago. By that, I mean, finding a song and movie the would get worldwide access on Youtube. Last night, as I stayed up to "watch" Rafa play in the Shanghai Final (I didn't really watch it with my usual concentration, although it was on another window on my MAC as I worked in iMovie). I was too interested in my video with Heath Ledger and Rafa, well, was a bit outplayed last night. Or should I say today, since it was Sunday in China.

Rafa lost to Nikolay Davydenko who played well.
Davydenko chose to receive first...something players all know about Rafa is that Rafa always has elected to receive when he has the choice. Most players, when they have the choice, elect to serve. So, I think players sometimes do this with Rafa to try to throw him into a discomfort zone.

Not that it made the difference. I am sure. Rafa never has an excuse.

Nikolay won in straight sets.

Rafa had some great shots. Nikolay just played better, I think, in my limited viewing and listening to the sportscasters.

Whatever glitches there are in this youtube, I apologize. Truly. However, it played smoothly at iMovie, as well as on Quick Time before I uploaded it at Youtube.

The Four Feathers is one of my favorite movies. I admire and adore Heath Ledger’s acting. And I so very much like the story and the writing. In this video, I concentrate on Harry’s (Heath's) special angel or spirit guide, Abou Fatma, played by the superb actor, Djimon Hounsou, Jack Durrance played by the outstanding actor, Wes Bentley. And I also concentrate on his other friends that Harry tries so hard to help, while they serve in the Royal Cumbrians. And of course, I focus a lot on Heath's Harry. So this is about friendship, loyalty, integrity and the journey Harry courageously took. The writer Michael Schiffer says it is also about redemption. I suppose it is, as Harry feels he must redeem himself. But to my mind, he had no need for redemption because of the reason that he didn’t want to go to war. Made sense to me.

When I made this video, I tested the song first by posting privately.

Then I tested The Four Feathers privately.

Both worked, then I proceeded. I learned my lesson previously with a Rod Stewart song which Warners Music Group rejected. I had Rod’s CD with Broken Arrow on it and selected the song, then went on the search to find an artist that doesn’t ban use on Youtube. I also learned a lesson with Brokeback Mountain - apparently watched over by NBC Universal.

I have been recommending The Four Feathers to friends, strangers and my doctor. I loaned my copy out today to someone who has been having a hard time finding it to rent. In my state you can get dvds from any library in the state for free. Once I passionately love a movie I buy it at amazon.com Even if I can record them from TV, I want the dvds because of the special features. Love the special features.

on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 7 minutes. I posted the hour long interview on Charlie Rose with Ang Lee and Heath Ledger regarding the film Brokeback Mountain on my previous post. This post's video takes portions of the hour long interview as a memoriam to Heath.

When Day is Done by British singer-songwriter Nick Drake. Heath wanted to make a movie about Nick Drake, who died in 1974 at the age of 26. He developed a posthumous cult following. During the productions of The Dark Knight, Heath had created a music video based on one of Drake's songs, Black Eyed Dog

Drake suffered from depression, insomnia and Drake died from an overdose of amitriptyline, an anti-depressant. This information was taken from the current cover story of Vanity Fair (August 2009), page 134, first column.

I am not sure if this video is the one Heath did. In the comments at Youtube PlasticPunkDoll says that this is basically it, except adds this comment: "The ending is different because Heath ends up drowning himself in a bathtub. They've only shown it publicly twice, so this is the best you'll get right now."

Nicholas Rodney "Nick" Drake (19 June 1948 – 25 November 1974) was an English singer-songwriter and musician best known for his acoustic, melodic, autumnal songs. His primary instrument was the guitar, though he was also proficient at piano, clarinet, and saxophone. Although he failed to find a wide audience during his lifetime, Drake's work has grown steadily in stature, to the extent that he now ranks among the most influential English singer-songwriters of the last 50 years.^[2][3][4]

Drake signed to Island Records when he was 20 years old and released his debut album, Five Leaves Left, in 1969. By 1972, he had recorded two more albums—Bryter Layter and Pink Moon. None of the albums sold more than 5,000 copies on their initial release.^[5] His reluctance to perform live or be interviewed further contributed to his lack of commercial success. Despite this, he was able to gather a loyal group of fans who would champion his music. One such person was his manager, Joe Boyd, who had a clause put into his own contract with Island Records that ensured Drake's records would never go out of print.

Drake suffered from depression and insomnia throughout his life, and these topics were often reflected in his lyrics. Upon completion of his third album, 1972's Pink Moon, he withdrew from both live performance and recording, retreating to his parents' home in rural Warwickshire. On 25 November 1974, Drake died from an overdose of amitriptyline, a prescribed antidepressant; he was 26 years old.

Living Outside As I Feel Inside

I don't like what life throws my way at times. It makes me struggle through. But there have been times of disharmony, or pain when I have also known right then and there that I am feeling a beauty with the disharmony, the pain. Why? I think maybe because it is in those moments that I feel very alive. Not dead inside. But vibrantly alive.

We, as a part of life, surely undulate - affected by all forces, elements of the universe. Chords in music fall into two classes: concords and discords. I love disharmony in music placed among the harmony. It makes it feel more real to me, the music richer. It would feel pretentious if only harmony was concordant.

For those who use their courage and heart to be on the journey of understanding, there is a chance Life will meet itself and feel abundance if only for fleeting moments. These are my moments of harmony. Exhaling and inhaling, the tide coming in and going out, rich joy and deep hurt - opposing forces maybe not dissimilar to harmony and disharmony. I want to feel alive. In a way that I am riding high on the awareness of it. And hopefully, on the dark days I can muddle through enough so that I not let the darkness swallow me up.

I strive for an open-ended approach to life. No one knows or has the fixed end-all answers. We can, each one, choose to take the road to journey on that is more vulnerable, one of integrity, discards the pretense and opens himself or herself to the possible hurts that others spend their whole lives pushing down, running from or denying.


I choose vulnerability. I can't live outside of who I am inside. So, since no one has the answers that I can live by, I try to trust my own sense of what feels to fit the universe's calling for me. That is the best that I can do.
