HOW TO CONTACT COMCAST AND MSNBC - FREEDOM OF SPEECH BOUGHT AND SOLD

What good is freedom of speech if we don't use it? What good is freedom of speech if it can be bought and sold?

Freedom of speech isn't a given right, it is a right that is only present with a platform and some platforms are more visible and get our attention in a more dramatic way. Television is one of those types of platforms. And the platform, such as a television show means you can be hired and fired.

I liked Keith Olbermann's special comments and the first half of his show. I liked that he said what he felt and didn't water it down. I liked that what he said was given with considerable thoughtful deliberation. I liked that he had a platform to speak. He helped me feel the likes of Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh got a response that made sense to me.

MSNBC fired Keith Olbermann and apparently didn't give him two weeks notice.

Comcast buys 51% stake in NBC Universal in $13.75bn deal

Cable giant and General Electric confirm plan to create media powerhouse including major TV shows and channels

American cable giant Comcast and General Electric, which controls NBC Universal, have confirmed they are to create a powerful new media and entertainment conglomerate that will bring some of the best-known TV shows and channels in the US together under one roof.

Comcast is buying a controlling 51% stake in NBC Universal in a deal valued at $13.75bn (£8.27bn), paying $6.5bn in cash.

The cable operator is also putting assets valued at $7.25bn into the new joint venture, which it will manage and will retain the NBC Universal name. They include its programming business, which owns cable channels such as E! Entertainment.

Comcast's programming and digital assets will be added to the existing NBCU business, valued at $30bn, which encompasses the NBC TV network, a Hollywood film studio and theme parks, cable channels including USA, Bravo and MSNBC.

Jeff Zucker, NBCU's president and chief executive, will oversee the new joint venture, reporting to Steve Burke, Comcast's chief operating officer.

GE will retain a 49% stake in NBCU. In a complex deal, the industrial conglomerate, which owned 80% of NBCU, has agreed to buy Vivendi's 20% stake in the company for $5.8bn. GE expects to raise a total of $9.8bn by selling down its stake.

As part of the deal, Comcast has the right to buy out GE's remaining interest at specified times, and industry observers expect the company to exit the business over time.

The Comcast chairman and chief executive, Brian Roberts, said: "This deal is a perfect fit for Comcast and will allow us to become a leader in the development and distribution of multiplatform 'anytime, anywhere' media that American consumers are demanding."

The deal is being billed by GE and Comcast as a marriage of equals that will leave NBCU better placed to meet some of the strategic challenges the media industry is facing.

It will give Comcast, which owns one of the biggest US cable networks, a bigger presence in the content business, with NBCU owning Hollywood studio Universal Pictures and the NBC TV network and production operation.

Comcast has nearly 25 million subscribers who use its cable network and, increasingly, its phone and high-speed broadband services. Taking control of NBCU may make it easier to experiment with new ways of distributing programming.

NBCU is an investor in Hulu, the video-on-demand website launched by several big media groups in the US, including Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. It allows users to watch shows free of charge, but it is widely expected to introduce some form of charging.

The deal is subject to regulatory approval in the US.

MORTGAGE finance company Fannie Mae is forgiving the mortgage debt of a 90-year-old woman who shot herself in the chest as sheriff's deputies tried to evict her.

Addie Polk's plight was publicised by Democratic law-maker Dennis Kucinich as Congress debated its $934 billion financial bailout last Friday.

Fannie Mae announced later that day it would dismiss its foreclosure action, forgive Ms Polk's mortgage and allow her to return to the home where she has lived since 1970.

Deputies were due to escort Ms Polk from her home when gunshots were heard inside.

Her neighbour climbed through her window and found her in bed bleeding.

She is expected to recover from chest wounds.

I address John McCain’s dealings with the felonious financier Charlie Keating in this section of Rolling Stone’s cover story.

But there’s quite a bit more about their relationship that comes from McCain himself, in his memoir Worth the Fighting For.

His account is replete with details of unrepentant entanglements and top-dollar favors that would make Jack Abramoff blush.

They were much more than “social friends” as McCain’s lawyer said on a conference call today.

Charlie Keating, his family and associates raised over $100,000 for my first campaign, and for each of the two that followed. That was a hell of a lot of money in those days…. Supporters like Charlie were not easy to come by for a first-time candidate, and I made damn sure that he knew how much I appreciated his support.

More important, I became friends with Charlie, his family, and many of the top executives and employees of his company. [pp. 59]

And…

He was as close to the archetype of the high-flying eighties chief executive as anyone I had encountered, and he was a hell of a lot of fun to be around.

On several occasions, he invited Cindy and me to his beautiful vacation retreat at Cat Cay in the Bahamas, flying us there, with our infant daughter, Meghan, and her nanny, on his private jet….

He entertained us lavishly, as was his style. We would all crowd on his yacht, off for a day of swimming and snorkeling, and then return for another extravagant party with the best wine, food, and entertainment available…

I would be lying if I were to deny… just how eagerly I awaited invitations to Charlie Keating’s Shangri-la. [pp. 60]

Hours after John McCain announced he was suspending his campaign to focus on fixing the nation's ailing economy, he pulled out of his scheduled appearance on the "The Late Show with David Letterman."

As our colleague Matea Gold reports on the Show Tracker blog, Letterman told the audience during the taping of Wednesday's show that McCain had called him personally to apologize for bailing. According to Letterman, McCain said he couldn't appear because he was rushing to the airport to get back to Washington.

But midway through the broadcast, Letterman appeared to learn that the Arizona senator was actually still in New York. In fact, McCain was just a few blocks away, at the CBS News headquarters. He was preparing for a last-minute exclusive interview with Katie Couric.

Incredulous, Letterman interrupted his interview with Keith Olbermann (who had filled in as a substitute for McCain) to show the audience a live shot on the internal CBS news feed of a makeup artist putting the finishing touches on McCain while he waited to talk to Couric.

“He doesn’t seem to be racing to the airport, does he?” Letterman said, shouting at the television monitor: “Hey John, I got a question! You need a ride to the airport?”

The senator and the comedian have always had a friendly repertoire. If McCain had appeared as planned on Wednesday, it would have been his 13th appearance on Letterman’s show. It was the venue where he originally announced his White House bid in 2007.

Letterman began his broadcast praising McCain, calling him “an honest-to-God hero." But then he turned critical, questioning McCain's decision to halt his campaign.

“I’m more than a little disappointed by this behavior,” he said. “We’re suspending the campaign. Suspending it because there’s an economic crisis, or because the poll numbers are sliding?”

“You don’t suspend your campaign,” Letterman went on. “Do you suspend your campaign? No, because that makes me think, well, you know, maybe there will be other things down the road –- if he’s in the White House, he might just suspend being president. I mean, we've got a guy like that now!”

Letterman later said today's events were an indication "that something is going haywire with the campaign."

BARACK OBAMA HAS A PRESS CONFERENCE AND ANSWERS QUESTIONS

Did John McCain take questions? Barack Obama did. McCain claims he works "across the aisle" and yet it was Barack Obama who called McCain in the spirit of working together at 8:30 a.m. today. Then, Barack and John talked again at 2:30 p.m. followed by John going public with this PUBLIC SHOW for an image to show his leadership ability. It would have been more in the spirit to work together and reach out to Barack in private to build a bridge. Going on public television to make this move was for John's sake, not the country's sake. Putting country first? Or gaming? John McCain made an attempt to make Barack look like he didn't care about the country if Barack didn't take his pressure to postpone the debate for Friday. This was a candidate being underhanded. A simple call to Barack Obama would have been what a true leader would have done - not make such an announcement publicly. It's either underhanded or poor judgment.

Barack Obama: On My Faith and My Church

The pastor of my church, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who recently preached his last sermon and is in the process of retiring, has touched off a firestorm over the last few days. He's drawn attention as the result of some inflammatory and appalling remarks he made about our country, our politics, and my political opponents.

Let me say at the outset that I vehemently disagree and strongly condemn the statements that have been the subject of this controversy. I categorically denounce any statement that disparages our great country or serves to divide us from our allies. I also believe that words that degrade individuals have no place in our public dialogue, whether it's on the campaign stump or in the pulpit. In sum, I reject outright the statements by Rev. Wright that are at issue.

Because these particular statements by Rev. Wright are so contrary to my own life and beliefs, a number of people have legitimately raised questions about the nature of my relationship with Rev. Wright and my membership in the church. Let me therefore provide some context.

As I have written about in my books, I first joined Trinity United Church of Christ nearly twenty years ago. I knew Rev. Wright as someone who served this nation with honor as a United States Marine, as a respected biblical scholar, and as someone who taught or lectured at seminaries across the country, from Union Theological Seminary to the University of Chicago. He also led a diverse congregation that was and still is a pillar of the South Side and the entire city of Chicago. It's a congregation that does not merely preach social justice but acts it out each day, through ministries ranging from housing the homeless to reaching out to those with HIV/AIDS.

Most importantly, Rev. Wright preached the gospel of Jesus, a gospel on which I base my life. In other words, he has never been my political advisor; he's been my pastor. And the sermons I heard him preach always related to our obligation to love God and one another, to work on behalf of the poor, and to seek justice at every turn.

The statements that Rev. Wright made that are the cause of this controversy were not statements I personally heard him preach while I sat in the pews of Trinity or heard him utter in private conversation. When these statements first came to my attention, it was at the beginning of my presidential campaign. I made it clear at the time that I strongly condemned his comments. But because Rev. Wright was on the verge of retirement, and because of my strong links to the Trinity faith community, where I married my wife and where my daughters were baptized, I did not think it appropriate to leave the church.

Let me repeat what I've said earlier. All of the statements that have been the subject of controversy are ones that I vehemently condemn. They in no way reflect my attitudes and directly contradict my profound love for this country.

With Rev. Wright's retirement and the ascension of my new pastor, Rev. Otis Moss, III, Michelle and I look forward to continuing a relationship with a church that has done so much good. And while Rev. Wright's statements have pained and angered me, I believe that Americans will judge me not on the basis of what someone else said, but on the basis of who I am and what I believe in; on my values, judgment and experience to be President of the United States.

But sometimes, I laugh at Keith's take on Bush.

HER QUESTION GAVE HILLARY A PLATFORM TO CRY ~ THEN VOTED FOR OBAMA

Marianne Young of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, asked Hillary Clinton the question, which the answer was repeated ad nauseam. As I volunteered in New Hampshire for six days, I have been out of touch with the media coverage pretty much.

You know ~ too busy going door-to-door to know what the media was up to. Here’s the thing, I am quite fanatical about MSNBC and especially, Chris Matthews’ Hardball and Keith Olbermann’s Countdown, including being highly impressed with Richard_Wolffe as seen on Olbermann’s Monday through Friday fare. And tonight had to catch up … Olbermann’s number 1 story was Marianne Young (who doesn’t look much different in age than Hillary Clinton) voted for Barack Obama and probably helped Hillary win. Well, anyway that is what I gathered from the pundits tonight. And Hillary, said she felt touched by and "connected" with this woman who voted for Barack. The question was "How do you do it?" and "Who does your hair?"

At our "Staging Area" where we met every dayThis is taken on the one day I had someone to go door-to-door with ~ she is now a citizen, but from Australia and thinks we have such a grand opportunity here, where we GET to be involved in the election. The young woman on the right is on Senator Obama's staff.

I was going to cut me out of this picture, as it is not flattering of me. But pride aside, here is Richard Wolffe and me in Salem High School. I saw him in the second "overflow" room of Barack Obama's speech, January 6, 2008. He was very gracious and offered to have a friend take our picture together. How sweet is that.

And I for one, believe America is having a test about voting for a black candidate. (Imagine if it was a black woman this time.) Look, racism is not over in the USA. I met an Italian family (born and raised in Italy and still have a house there, etc), who vote here in New Hampshire. They obviously lean toward the Democrats. And the one adult son, gave me a very passionate monologue why this country is not willing to consider voting in a black president. Of course, I am totally voting for Barack Obama ~ that black man that is who he means. Nevermind that Barack had a white mother and a black father. But his real argument with me, who in no way was arguing about anything, was that only 2% of Americans vote by using the right criteria, policy, records and character of integrity. I sucked the wind right out of his sails when I let him ramble on, then restated for clarity that I understood his stands and then told him I agreed with him only that I wholeheartedly support this man Barack Obama. By the end, he said if Barack Obama wins, then God bless him. As he drove off, he gave me a thumbs up.

This business of Hillary Clinton is now at a place that I will stop being so neutral. Hillary has redefined herself in days that are too close together for anyone who pays real attention to accept her as genuine. She clobbers Barack with unwarranted criticisms then acts like she doesn’t know why people don’t think she is soft enough or let’s call it human. And by “people” maybe I should say media people ~ those that follow her. They see her in a more comprehensive way than the rest of us. And even they have been saying that Hillary is nicer in a one-on-one than in these public settings. As for me, I will count on my own radar about Hillary ~ I don’t like her anymore. I used to. Just not anymore. She let too many staff dirt balls fly and it is simply too unbelievable that someone who is so controlling wouldn’t be fully knowledgeable about this tactical politicking. Hillary has her talents but being true to herself isn’t something that Hillary has mastered. She is a politician that puts politicians in a category of not being straight with us. She is not strong in ways that Barack is, so she attacks those strengths in Barack.

Her poo-pooing of Barack by attacking some of his strengths of energizing our best assests as people of a democracy is stupid. May I say that? Yes.

Barack is a natural. By that I mean, he is comfortable with who he is and one of his best things about who he is ~ is that he is “natural” and not stiff. Hillary couldn’t match up in this category if her life depended upon it. Barack if allowed would lead this country in ways that Hillary couldn’t dream of. And I mean in a good way.

I think that most people who vote don’t pay more than surface attention to the one they vote for. I was in New Hampshire when this happened and I not only went door-to-door, but I stayed with a Republican family who officially are Independents. My opinion: Most people don’t vote and those who do, vote after watching a debate or two and not knowing issues or much about them. I found that people vote on one issue or another and especially about abortion or gay rights. And the other issues are non-binding to them, such as the trillion-dollar war, fair voting, lobbyists, truth in government, jobs, our debt and taking out our loans to run our country from China and Japan, the environment, nuclear war, terrorism, torture, stomping all over our Constitution, open government. ABORTION AND GAY RIGHTS ~ their most important issues that they select a candidate for the free world on. I find this incredible. When watching the debate in New Hampshire, a comment was made that the subject of paid lobbyists was a worthless subject ~ “what are they talking about this for?” I couldn’t disagree more. I think our democracy is in danger, unless we address paid lobbyists who “buy” off our elected representatives.
