RAFAEL NADAL SCHEDULED TO PLAY ST PATRICK'S DAY in SINGLES & DOUBLES at INDIAN WELLS '09

I got four stitches in one of my fingers at the knuckle this afternoon. Typing is not wise. And lately I have been busy with Darfur and also trying to learn three different versions of uploading video to work on iMovie, at which I am a complete novice. I spent one entire night on it Saturday into Sunday and another near-all-nighter last night. I finally posted my first video at youtube. Unfortunately the video quality is even poorer than it was at iMovie where it wasn't that great to begin with as it started out as a poor quality VHS. Hopefully, I can make it clearer eventually.

Sunday, I tried another project with my digital movie camera, but couldn't figure out how to upload it to my computer. I am taking private video editing classes and my second session is Wednesday. This project is for Darfur.

Anyway, I started this post to explain why I have been busy and not positng about Rafa Nadal at Indian Wells. Sorry to those who count on me for your Rafa connection.

And now about Rafa

In his second-round match at the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells Rafa won over Michael Berrer 6-2, 6-1. He will play Dmitry Tursunov in the next round.

On Friday, Rafa and Marc Lopez won their first-round doubles match against Cermak and Mertinak, 7-6(2), 4-6, 10-7. They will play either the Bryan brothers in the next round.

Rafa did not play on Monday, March 16.

Why Activism (Still) Matters for Sudan… And What You Can Do

Given the recent International Criminal Court arrest warrant issued for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and the reaction by Khartoum to expel sixteen local and international humanitarian aid organizations, robust and courageous action is needed now from the Obama administration and its allies. Enough's latest strategy paper argues that this kind of action will not be forthcoming unless there is demonstrated a political demand for it from dedicated constituencies of activists.

"In the past, thoughtful and persistent antigenocide activism has made a clear difference in the actions taken by political leaders in the international community," says Enough's field director and report co-author John Bagwell. "From diplomatic negotiations to peacekeeping operations to economic pressures, extraordinary activist efforts have been shedding light on the conflict in Darfur for over 5 years now and saving lives as a result."

"The activist movement for peace in Sudan is needed now more than ever," argues the reports other co-author, Enough co-founder John Prendergast. "Now is the time to speak out: to save lives; to work toward a lasting peace; and to hold those who have conducted war crimes accountable. We must resist the temptation to jump at overly simplistic or ineffective solutions and proceed with appropriate humility, but continue to act with the knowledge that our efforts as activists are a crucial component to achieving peace in Sudan."

WHAT: Rally/protest/demonstration to draw urgent attention to the dire emergency in Darfur that may result in 1 million deaths in the next two weeks.

WHY: Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir expelled 16 humanitarian organizations from Sudan, placing millions of Darfuri civilians at immediate risk. Bashir is making good on his threats against innocent Darfuris in order to retain his own grip on power, a cynical retaliation after the International Criminal Court issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Without the assistance provided by the expelled humanitarian organizations, well over a million internally displaced Darfuris are at immediate risk. With the rainy season quickly approaching, there are grave fears of widespread death from disease and starvation as millions lose access to food, water, medicine and adequate shelter.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

1) Attend! Consider cancelling existing plans and prioritize attending this event. Millions of lives are at stake. If you can only part of the event, come for 5-6 PM.

2) Use your creativity and bring a sign with you. Possible messages include but are not limited to: Darfur Emergency, 1 Million Lives at Stake, Genocide by Starvation, Restore Aid Now, Yes We Can Save Darfur, Obama/Clinton Act Now. All creative ideas encouraged. Use of red also encouraged.

However, their typical songs are upbeat, this is one of the rare slow songs. A real gem. I have worn out this cut on my CD, which I purchased at a concert at Waterplace Park in Providence, Rhode Island - the whole band signed all the CDs I purchased. The best $10 CDs ever! I own four of their CDs.


I have never enjoyed dancing more than to this band. The bass, the congos, percussion, the trumpets, keyboard...then there is the singing. It is one of those things that make you glad you are alive.

Subject Pronouns

The words "I" "you" "he" "she" "we" "you-all" and "they" are called subject pronouns. Spanish has corresponding subject pronouns. Heres a list of the English subject pronouns and their Spanish equivalents:

Spanish has a formal and an informal form of the word "you." "Usted" is more formal and is generally used to express respect. "Tú" is more familiar and is used among friends, coworkers, relatives, or when addressing a child.

Speaking to your boss: usted

Speaking to your friend: tú

This same distinction with regard to degree of formality occurs in the plural form as well. When referring to "you-all," there are two choices in Spanish:

One piece of advice everyone... especially if you are starting from scratch learning a foreign language! Don't try to run before you walk... It is a bit mind blowing when you see how many tenses there are isn't it! If any of you need a bit of help understanding, here is the equivalent in English... for example of the verb "to eat" ... "comer".

Above are the easiest forms of verbs to learn as a starter. The subjunctive tenses are hard to understand because in English we do not change the verb form depending on who is the subject or the object... An example:

"I hope that you eat something" there are two verbs in the sentence "I hope" and "you eat". The subject is "I" but the "you eat" will be the verb that is in the subjunctive case.

It will be much easier for you to start with the present tense, and try to improve your knowledge of verbs in the present tense.

One last thing that you will see. There are two ways of saying "You". The first "tu" is for a friend or young family member, the second is "Usted" (seen abbreviated as "Vd" when written) and this is used when talking to people that you are not familiar with, or older family members and is the more respectful way of addressing them. This is why you also see two different words for the 2nd person plurals above.... the first is the familiar version, and the second is the polite version.

Djokovic and Nadal advance at windy Indian Wells

INDIAN WELLS, California, March 15 (Reuters) - Defending champion Rafael Nadal cruised into the third round of the Pacific Life Open on Saturday while third seed Novak Djokovic had to work a little harder to advance.

Spaniard Nadal swept aside Colombian qualifier Santiago Giraldo 6-3 6-3 after Djokovic had survived a shaky second set in swirling winds on the Stadium Court to beat Italian Andreas Seppi 6-3 7-6.

Djokovic, who clinched his maiden grand slam title at the Australian Open in January, struggled for fluency after dominating his opponent with crunching groundstrokes before wrapping up victory in one hour and 40 minutes.

"Everybody could realise the wind was the most thing difficult today," the 20-year-old Serb said in a courtside televised interview after clinching the tiebreak 7-3.

"It was a big factor. In the desert it is probably a good thing to have the wind to cool off a little bit but for us it's a pain in the ...," he added before trailing off.

Djokovic, who lost to Nadal in last year's final at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, will next meet Belgian Xavier Malisse or Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Despite the blustery conditions, Djokovic delivered an exquisite drop shot to break Seppi in the fourth game before breezing through the first set in 36 minutes.

The Serb, who piled up five ATP titles in 2007, broke his opponent again in the fifth game of the second set before squandering his first match point when leading 5-3 and 30-40 in the ninth.

TRADED BREAKS

Seppi broke Djokovic for the first time in the 10th game before the two players traded further breaks of serve to level at 6-6 and take the set into a tiebreak.

"I started well and I played the first set pretty solid," the Serb said. "But then suddenly I started making a lot of mistakes.

"It was a very ugly match to watch with a lot of unforced errors, because it was so windy that you couldn't get the rhythm."

Nadal, the world number two and second seed, broke Giraldo twice in each set to secure victory in just over an hour.

"I am very happy being back at Indian Wells and I have very nice memories from last year," the muscular left-hander said. "This court is always very special for me."

Tenth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych made an early exit, losing 2-6 7-6 6-4 to Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka.

In other matches, eighth-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet swept aside Swede Robin Soederling 6-3 6-2 and Spaniard David Ferrer, the fifth seed, eased past Belgian Olivier Rochus 6-2 6-2. (Editing by Peter Rutherford) Source: sport.guardian.co.uk

I'm a novice at obtaining this information, so I understand how dependent some of us are on getting the information in a timely manner.

To admit my "novice-status" I will admit I have been watching Fox all day because I thought the tennis matches would be there. But by going to the Pacific Life Open website and finding the above links I found out that the matches are on Fox Sports Channel ,which for me is Channel 55. They just now showed Rafa and mentioned he would be playing later as a "favorite player wherever he goes".
