WHEN YOU LIE UPON YOUR DEATH BED ~ WHAT WILL HAVE BEEN THE IMPORTANT THINGS YOU DID

OR SAID?

To gain and keep perspective in my life, I visualize and feel what I expect to feel if I get to my end knowing my death is soon to be. It instantly makes all things right for me. What will be important then comes front and center and what I once labored or fretted over just loses its grip on me. It won't matter that my family is broken, disconnected or differs from me in their beliefs, politics and ways of handling the truth. What will matter is how I lived my life. What I said, but more how I said... It will matter to me if I chose to be silent when I should have spoken up. Clear and with passion. It will matter to me if I consistently had truth as my anchor, strength and target.

This is one of those things that has my attention. And I feel stories such as these are neglected, dismissed and thrown out while our narcissism consumes our behavior.

Peace process near collapse in eastern Congo

The peace process in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo is on the verge of collapse due to resumed hostilities between Government forces and rebels loyal to Congolese general Laurent Nkunda. Absent immediate and robust diplomatic pressure on the Congolese government and a more impartial effort by United Nations peacekeepers to stop the fighting, the region could descend back into total war.

After weeks of tit-for-tat violence, large-scale fighting between the Congolese army and Nkunda's National Congress for the Defense of People, or CNDP, began again on August 28 in the territory of Rutshuru, North Kivu. Violence has since spread to Masisi territory in North Kivu, and Kalehe territory in South Kivu. The clashes are the largest violations to date of the cease-fire agreement signed last January in Goma (capital of North Kivu) between the Congolese government, the CNDP, and 21 other armed groups active in the East.

The fighting has newly displaced an estimated 100,000 civilians in North Kivu, and has curtailed access for humanitarian aid agencies across the province. On September 25, the Enough Project -along with 82 other NGOs-released a statement on the humanitarian costs of faltering peace efforts. This follow-up examines why those diplomatic efforts are failing and what steps the international community must immediately take to halt the violence and reinvigorate the peace process.

DARFUR'S DREAM ISN’T DIFFERENT THAN EVERYONE ELSE ON THE PLANET – LIFE WITHOUT GENOCIDE

Sometimes I get so annoyed, well maybe, angry, would be the honest emotion that we let genocide to go on. Not to leave out the other disgusting behaviors that we ignore. Like ignoring is the thing to do! A few of the other disgusting behaviors: child soldiers, modern-day slavery, ignoring the poor, selling weapons to rogue nations, lying by our President and his selected crew, children left to raise themselves, a foster care program that is chronically underfunded……

I was told that I was raised to be a Christian. I say "told" because as it turns out, it is hypocritical that I was raised to be a Christian - the behavior of my family fails to witness Christian behavior. However, even though the "born again" Christian beliefs have morphed into a personal belief approach for me, I choose some of the Bible statements as acceptable standards to live by and one is in the book of Matthew, chapter 25, verses 31-46:

31"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'

37"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'

40"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

41"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'

44"They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'

45"He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'

46"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

Okay, I admit that I am not worried about being condemned to eternal punishment in some place called “hell”, however the idea that the way we treat or care for others, whether we know them or don’t know them is a fulcrum to our humanness. This idea of treating others with kindness and empathy speaks to who we are as human beings.

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." — Jesus (c. 5 B.C. - A.D. 32 ) in the Gospels, Matthew 7:12, Matthew 22:39, Luke 6:31, Luke 10:27 – is another one that I try to live by. But this principle is so good, that it is found in various religions and philosophies. It is not an exclusively Biblical principle. It just is the right thing to do regardless of where we got the idea. Makes me wonder – isn’t it just common sense? Do we need a religion to tell us this idea. We are given love to give it – that’s my thinking.

As the Games approach, advocates for security in Darfur have an extraordinary opportunity to reach out to the Chinese government, in its role as host, to urge Beijing’s leaders to use their considerable influence with Sudan.

We will know when we have succeeded when a robust peacekeeping force is in Darfur and there is security for civilians and humanitarian workers.”

CALL 1 800 GENOCIDE...LET'S MAKE GENOCIDE HISTORY

While it is so easy to get in a tizzy over relatively minor things, there are relatively major things going on that cry out for our getting in an uproar. Slaughtering, slashing off body parts, including genitalia, burning people of all ages alive, gang raping females of all ages and torturing human beings - all targeting a specific group of human beings - that is genocide by definition. But it doesn't appear to be a problem for the world to allow this to go on for four and a half years now, in the Sudanese region of Darfur. It's been documented by the African Union troops, which by the way has been their only mandate – to document. We have pictures. It has been reported. Granted for a story of this magnitude, it is under-reported, but the story has been told. Films have been made and distributed. It is easy to find the story on YouTube. And yet, there is no uproar. There is no outcry. There is no priority status for doing something.

We should be ashamed. But we aren't. Somehow it is easy just to not think about it and go about our lives as if nothing is wrong with the human race turning its back on a group of people who are virtually worthless to us. I believe this says who we are as individuals, families, as communities, as nations and as a world that has no moral compass and no heart. How can we let this go on?

And there is plenty you can do. You can use your speech, your voice, your actions and demand that your elected governmental representatives in Washington, D. C. and in your country wherever you live STOP AND THINK WHAT CAN BE DONE TO STOP THIS INHUMANITY TO HUMANITY. If we want something, we can do something about it. These things that we do to one another and these things that we are complicit about are beneath our values.

Matthew Rhys and Ioan Gruffudd - Two Young Welsh-speaking Actors Who Grew Up Together in Cardiff, Wales and are actually close friends. Well, close enough to have owned their house together for ten years in or just outside London, England. Ioan is marrying Alice Evans September 2007. I newly learned of their acting talents November 2006. But I’m enamored now. I adore Matthew as Kevin Walker on my favorite TV show (Sunday nights at 10:00 p.m. on ABC and also purchased by England’s channel 4, I believe it is) and Ioan is in the current movie, Amazing Grace, which I have seen 10 times so far.
