DARFUR - WHAT IS NEEDED NOW

1) Justice now. This is a paramount demand for the Darfuris, a society torn apart by atrocities and genocide.

To date (after 7 years of atrocities) not a single perpetrator is arrested or stood trial in the International Criminal Court.

2) The Government of Sudan is intending to dismantle the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps before the national elections in April 2010 - all under the disguise of the program, Voluntary Return. Leaders in the Darfuris refugee camps are intimidated, detained, and assassinated by the Sudanese Governments' Security Agents, in order to force the IDPs to desert the camps.

3) 2010 Elections in Darfur are not welcomed. This is stated by many leaders of the refugees. They (the refugees and their leaders) believe that elections under current situation would be a sham only to legitimize the rule of AlBashir and his ruling Party, the National Congress Party (NCP).

4) Still the humanitarian aid is not to the level of providing decent living conditions in many refugee camps.

This is the response from my letter of March 12, 2009, which I received July 10, 2009 (actually I received this same letter from President Obama a total of three times for the seven or so letters I sent him about Darfur):

Dear Sandra Hammel:

Thank you for your letter urging action to end the genocide in Darfur. I share your outrage over the hundreds of thousands of lives lost, and the suffering of millions more. It has gone on for far too long. Bringing relief to the battered region of Darfur is a top priority for my Administration.

As President, I will build on America's efforts that I previously championed in the Senate. I led in calling for the joint African Union/United Nations peacekeeping force now on the ground, and insisted on comprehensive sanctions against the Khartoum government. Going forward, my Administration will continue this work with
unstinting resolve to end the genocide.

In my discussions with other nations, I will work to ensure that tough sanctions on the Khartoum government continue as a part of a growing global effort involving our allies, interested countries, and other multilateral institutions. It is equally critical that we focus on the civilians who are in dire need of life-saving assistance. I will work with Congress to provide necessary humanitarian aid because America must lead with our words and our actions.

Thank you again for expressing your concern about this human catastrophe we are working hard to address. It is very encouraging to hear from Americans like you who act not on self-interest, but on a moral imperative. Our action and leadership will demonstrate who we are as a Nation and as a people.

The man who wrote in the margins of the Rwandan genocide report, "Not On My Watch". And yet that is exactly what has been happening ever since Colin Powell called what is happening in Darfur, Sudan genocide. Genocide is systematic behavior that is killing off a group of people by means of murder, denial of food, justice and fair play, rape and torture with impunity.

So the world sat largely silently listening to a crazed little man rant about the abuses in the rest of the world. But his condemnation of the war in Sudan and the creation of refugees in Darfur could not blot out the reality of his war in Iraq and the millions who have fled that hell hole.

Bush declared:
Every civilized nation also has a responsibility to stand up for the people suffering under dictatorship," the president said. "In Belarus, North Korea, Syria and Iran, brutal regimes deny their people the fundamental rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration" of the United Nations.

This was chutzpah. Just before Bush began speaking a series of car bombs swept Iraq killing and wounding hundreds. A country the United States has occupied for more than four years continues to be ravaged by violence. The Iraqi people themselves are denied the rights Bush extolled. Hell, the United States even protects mercenary armies--like Blackwater--who operate outside of any law and kill innocent civilians without any consequence.

The rest of the world sees and understands our hypocrisy. Unfortunately, many Americans share the ignorance and vacuity of George Bush and do not realize how foolish and stupid we look on the world stage. Today's performance by George Bush does nothing to win friends or influence enemies. It simply reinforces the notion that the United States is in the grips of a President who has fulfilled the prophecy of H.L. Mencken:

" . . . all the odds are on the man who is, intrinsically, the most devious and mediocre — the man who can most easily (and) adeptly disperse the notion that his mind is a virtual vacuum. The presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

The Darfur Accountability and Divestment Act (H.R. 180) passed the House of Representatives on Tuesday, July 31, by a vote of 418 to one. This important bill would create a list of foreign companies helping to fund the genocide, prohibit U.S. government contracts with these companies, and provide federal protection to states that choose to divest. Senator Christopher Dodd (D-CT) plans to introduce the same bill in the Senate, but there is opposition to critical provisions of H.R. 180. Bush Administration Opposes Sudan Divestment Bill

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A bill that would allow U.S. states to divest from companies doing business in Sudan could hurt international efforts to end the violence in war-torn Darfur, Bush administration officials told a Senate panel on Wednesday.
The pending Senate bill aims to put economic pressure on Sudan to stop the violence in its western Darfur region, where an estimated 200,000 people have been killed since rebels took up arms against the government in 2003.
Jendayi Frazer, assistant secretary of state for African affairs, said the Bush administration was confident its sanctions were working and warned against legislative measures that might undo progress.
"We are concerned that some initiatives to increase economic pressure on Sudan will damage our relationship with our key partners rather than increase pressure in Khartoum," Frazer told the Senate Banking Committee hearing.
But several senators voiced support for the bill and said they would work to get it passed.
Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey said he did not "understand how the State Department can come before committee and say this is inappropriate."
Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, a bill co-sponsor and Republican presidential candidate, said: "We have a responsibility to ensure that genocide does not continue on our watch or on our dime."
In July, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a bill that would protect investment managers who pull money out of key sectors in Sudan from lawsuits from disgruntled investors. It also calls on the U.S. government to list companies whose business in Sudan supports "genocidal practices."
The companion Senate bill would allow state or local governments to adopt measures to prohibit any investment of state assets in the Sudanese government or in any company with a qualifying business relationship with Sudan.
That bill has yet to move out of the Senate Banking Committee, a crucial step in the legislative process.
DIVESTMENT
Adam Szubin, director of the Treasury's sanctions arm, the Office of Foreign Assets Control, said a list would by nature consist of foreign companies whose activities in Sudan were most likely legal in their home countries.
"Such a list likely will be viewed by our allies as a U.S. government 'blacklist'... and therefore as an unwelcome effort by the United States to expand the scope of our sanctions," Szubin said in written testimony.
"Such a list seriously risks alienating the very countries whose assistance we need to maintain and increase international pressure on the Bashir regime," he said.
U.S. companies are generally prohibited from investing in and conducting business in Sudan without a license from OFAC. Creation of a list of companies would also impose ongoing burdens on the agency that would divert resources from other activities, Szubin said.
Since 2005, 20 states have adopted Sudan divestment policies, according to the Sudan Divestment Task Force.
Activists have pressured investors to divest their holdings in companies such as PetroChina Co Ltd, whose parent company, China National Petroleum Corp, is helping Sudan drill for oil. Malaysia's state-owned Petronas and India's ONGC are also targets.

The Guardian has obtained confirmation from newly discovered files in the US National Archives that a firm of which Prescott Bush was a director was involved with the financial architects of Nazism.

His business dealings, which continued until his company's assets were seized in 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act, has led more than 60 years later to a civil action for damages being brought in Germany against the Bush family by two former slave labourers at Auschwitz and to a hum of pre-election controversy.

I SMELL A SKUNK …EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE …WHAT IS BUSH HIDING

George W Bush has lost sense of reality. He thinks he is King Bush apparently. To me he appears to believe that he is above the law. I mean, the word “outlaw” seems to fit his behavior. He appears to think that truth is something to be toyed with. And as long as this behavior works for him, as long as the United States’ citizens enable him, as long as he is not held accountable, he will keep on keeping on. He actually looks bored, unattached and oblivious.

How does Tony Snow, his Press Secretary, do it? How does he maintain a brain and say what he has to say every day to prop up GW? How does he keep his self-respect? Is it some dark sense of humor that keeps him sane?

I feel like my own sanity is being tested by GW. But a close second is the apathy that is shown by us. Okay I do laugh at George at times, but it’s only because crying is too depressing and would add to the knot in my stomach.

If I lived in Washington, D.C. I am sure that I would have arrived at my present state a long time ago. Maybe, the trouble is that Washington, D.C. is so far removed from the central part of the country that it seems untouchable to the average USA citizen. This guy is unraveling and fast. He is falling apart before our eyes. And are we noticing? The rest of the world is. Some, if not, rare, journalist in the USA are. I feel like screaming, but what good would that do? So I watch, blog and wait. And then he does some other mindless thing. It’s more than annoying. It’s more than embarrassing. And yet. And yet, there are those who stand by this guy. I just don’t get it. Well, I sort of do. I mean I “know” these people, they are my family. See, he “says” enough to keep them happy. You know…that abortion is wrong…that stem cell research is wrong…that gay people are wrong…that he is a “born again Christian”. Recently he used a phrase from a hymn that I recognized. I knew he was saying it for his fundamentalist Christian base. The phrase: "Wonder-working power". The thing is he really “used" the fundamentalist Christians when he campaigned. There is nothing compassionately Christian about his behavior. He has helped big business and left the average American in the ditch. He has no idea how to handle Iraq, so we have “stayed and stayed and stayed the course. He has taken the “Peter Principle” to the extreme. That is when you rise to the level of your incompetence. He has taken justice and stomped on it, shredded it and disrespected the integrity of the word.

There are thousands of places around the world that get no attention, no media coverage, not a thought as to their importance or their happy or sad, hellish daily lives, but the whole world watches us, the United States of America. But, that could change. And sooner than thought possible. Stength is measured in money and military power. And we are in debt so far beyond imagination as a nation. Bush says aides will not testify

The row hinges on whether the attorneys were sacked for political motives.

Democratic leaders say they could go to court to challenge Mr Bush's move. He invoked the same little-used power last month to withhold subpoenaed documents.

The White House says Mr Bush is acting in good faith and has offered to let the aides do off-the-record interviews.

The pair in question are Harriet Miers, former White House counsel, and Sara Taylor, former political director for the White House.

Ms Miers has been summoned to appear under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday and Ms Taylor to testify before the House Judiciary Committee the next day.

'Unreasonable' demands

The Democratic heads of the two judiciary committees had set a deadline of Monday for the White House to explain the first invocation of privilege last month and to log what documents were being withheld.

In a letter to congressional leaders, White House counsel Fred Fielding said their demands were ‘unreasonable’ because they represented ‘a substantial incursion into presidential prerogatives’.

John Conyers, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, responded with a warning that Congress was prepared to go to court over the matter.

‘Contrary to what the White House may believe, it is Congress and the courts that will decide whether an invocation of executive privilege is valid, not the White House unilaterally,’ he wrote.

Simmering row

The row over the firing of eight federal US attorneys in 2006 has been building for several months.

Democrats in Congress have been trying to force the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, accusing him of firing the prosecutors for political reasons and then lying about the reason for their dismissal.

Some Republicans have also backed the moves.

But the White House maintains the prosecutors were fired because they were ineffective. Mr Bush has dismissed the attempts to remove Mr Gonzales as being themselves political.

US presidents have occasionally used executive privilege to try to prevent themselves and their aides from having to answer questions or give information to Congress or the courts.

“It seems that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has a far worse memory than we thought.

Well, either that, or he's a liar.

Congress is still investigating how eight U.S. attorneys -- including Western Washington's John McKay -- were fired. Don't ask Gonzales what happened. He doesn't recall. He's too busy doing important things like coming to Seattle (the nerve!) to speak before a group of technology executives on protecting intellectual property.

And now, The Washington Post reports that while trying to get the USA Patriot Act renewed in 2005, Gonzales testified before the Senate that ‘There has not been one verified case of civil liberties abuse.’ But less than a week before that testimony, the FBI had sent Gonzales a report indicating that agents had overstepped in their information-gathering procedures, accessing more personal info than they legally ought to have. In fact, according to FBI documents obtained by The Post, for three months prior to his testimony, Gonzales had been receiving reports of ‘legal or procedural violations,’ including an illegal property search and unauthorized surveillance. The Justice Department spokesperson says Gonzales' statements were ‘consistent with statements from other officials.’ Which could mean that they were all lying or that no one, including Gonzales, had read the reports.

That Gonzales lacks the sense of honor to resign is clear. Too bad we can't demand that his boss, President Bush, fire him. Bush has his hands full stonewalling the congressional investigation into the firings of the U.S. attorneys. But, America, you are the boss of Gonzales' boss. You can have the attorney general -- a civil officer -- impeached. Your representatives in Congress can start those proceedings any day now.”

GW BUSH WAS IN MY LITTLE TOWN TODAY

BUSH IN TOWN, BUT OUT OF SIGHT

It's a given:
I love where I live, though its size is small, it has grand opportunities and much beauty. A small seaport called Newport, Rhode Island has history, of course the native north Americans' and of the colonial days. Newport is actually an island called Aquidneck Island by the Indians and the actual Island of Rhode Island on the map. There are only three towns on Aquidneck Island, the south end is Newport, the north end is Portsmouth and the middle is uncreatively called Middletown. I'm a transplant here, living here since I was 24 years old and now I have to admit, I'm way past those years now. Rhode Island is a tiny state...you can get anywhere in this state in an hour basically. Our biggest town is Providence, the capital of Rhode Island. The word "providence" means "God, when conceived omnisciently, directing the universe and the affairs of humankind with wise benevolence". The fact that the city of Providence has such substance and almighty meaning behind the definition of its name is humbling, or at least, should be humbling.

We have the mighty and beautiful tallships gracing our harbor right now. At night, their outlines are beautifully lit up. And PRESIDENT BUSH was here today. But none of us got to see him. The news reported that Airforce One landed on the Navy Base here at 10:30 a.m. He was invited by our Republican Governer Donald Carcieri to come to Rhode Island today. Now there is only one state left that Bush has never visited - Vermont. Rhode Island was taken off that short list today. Our two United States Senators and our two Representatives are all Democrat, and his approval rating here in Rhode Island according to one of the signs at the protest today, is as low as his IQ. Many of the signs were on that order, of say ... "insulting".

President was scheduled to speak at 11:00 a.m. I am a major activist here in RI for stopping genocide, specifically the one in Darfur that is four years and four months old. So I went with my poster

to the sight of other protesters gathered today close to the Navy Base where Mr. Bush spoke about the subject of

TERROR.

Only two of us had signs about Darfur. All of the other signs were of peace, getting out of Iraq,

not getting into Iran, impeaching Bush and or Cheney and so on.

We had around 250 people. Wal-Mart wouldn't let us park in their huge lot. But the Pizza Hut gave us permission. Afterward, I went to thank the manager for allowing us to do so. I think he was surprised that I did this. But it was apparent that he appreciated the "shout out".

Okay, we were pretty confident that President Bush wouldn't want to see us and would not drive by our little protest, but we knew the television cameras would probably come for the show. However, mostly they reported President Bush's speech on TERROR.

The real terror is President Bush and his "non-executive branch", Vice-President Dick Cheney. Did you hear about VP Dick Cheney saying that he isn't fully a member of the executive branch of the government this week? Unbelievable, but he said it.

The support of those who drove by all of our signs was overwhelmingly in support of the protesters. And when my neighbor

It's too bad that President Bush chooses to only represents those that he can pidgeon hole as his true supporters. His supporters have given this man license to ruthlessly strip us as a nation of our reputation worldwide with his stupidity. When he "ran" for President he only allowed people into his "town meetings" who supported him. He hand picked his crowds. What kind of democracy is it, that the Presidential candidate will only speak in front of those that he hand picks?

This guy has sold us down a political river and doesn't even care that it's polluted.

I'm not a Bush supporter because I don't agree with anything that he has done as President.

When what’s wrong is pretended to be right, we are not facing the truth. That is a problem. And that is where we are as a nation of wrongs with the current Administration.

Iraq should not have been invaded. And “not leaving” Iraq will never make that fact right, Mr. President.

MATTHEW RHYS & IOAN GRUFFUDD FUN FEST

Matthew Rhys and Ioan Gruffudd - Two Young Welsh-speaking Actors Who Grew Up Together in Cardiff, Wales and are actually close friends. Well, close enough to have owned their house together for ten years in or just outside London, England. Ioan is marrying Alice Evans September 2007. I newly learned of their acting talents November 2006. But I’m enamored now. I adore Matthew as Kevin Walker on my favorite TV show (Sunday nights at 10:00 p.m. on ABC and also purchased by England’s channel 4, I believe it is) and Ioan is in the current movie, Amazing Grace, which I have seen 10 times so far. It open in England, Ireland and Wales March 23, 2007.
