9 WEEKS IN AND KEVIN FINALLY GETS A KISS

It took too long and now we have a writers’ strike ~ justifiably ~ but still, we waited too long to see Kevin get a kiss and now we may never see the rest of the season of Brothers and Sisters.

This episode was written by two females, Jennifer Cecil and Sherri Cooper-Landsman. And the writing between Scotty and Kevin was either good, the actors just were great at presenting it or both. I don’t write about an episode unless I like it enough to invest the effort. I liked this episode. It felt more real or less predictable than the episodes prior to “36 Hours” this season. “Something New” had some pleasant little surprise lines that gave me a laugh, smile or surge of excitement. Nothing offensive, other than the sleeze-Lena being the assigned character-of-the-moment to dislike.

Let me start with the part that I am drawn to the most ~ Kevin and his love life. Thank goodness, he has “a someone” in his life that we can enjoy again. This show suffers when he doesn’t.

Scotty is ba-ack. Well, yes, he’s been living at Kevin’s apartment, but tonight they kissed. I hear that Eric Winter ~ who plays Jason McCallister ~ has signed on to be back on Brothers and Sisters, but that is all I know by choice. I don’t like to know ahead what is coming, so I purposely stay uninformed unless I unexpectedly read something.

Scotty: (Carrying in lobsters and champagne, walking into Kevin's apartment.) I come with decadence.

Kevin: Light some candles, I’ll be right back.

Jason finally calls Kevin from Malaysia. A very excited Kevin to Jason: Jason, Oh my God. Oh, I’ve missed you. Yeah, yeah, I need to talk to you, too.

Then we find that Kevin has broken up with Jason on the very phone call that he was so thrilled to get from Jason. Hmmm….love to know what happened on that phone call. …and how Kevin turned from being loyal and in love with Jason to. . .

Kevin to Scotty: I finally spoke to Jason. I broke up with him (this is a puzzle, it seemed like Jason must have been the one to break up with Kevin . . . hmmm . . .) Scotty, when I first met you, what we had was messy. We were hot and cold, back and forth, all over the place. But I want to be back there with you because I want to be honest about who I am.

Scotty: Did you tell Jason we slept together.
Kevin: Yes, I did.

Wow, the story really moved ahead tonight. We open with everyone sharing their “first times”.

The second thing that I love about this show is Sally Field. I like it when the story has her going for some “love life”. She can be real special when the script gives her some stuff to put her best into. She really cleared out the room when she talked about “Pretty Woman” in the opening scene. She just forges ahead into “intimate territory”, but the adult children don’t really want to hear.

Nora (Sally Field) meets up with her "sexual encounter of the first kind", Stan Harris, who is played by Chevy Chase.

Julia (Sarah Jane Morris) returned to her marriage with Tommy (Balthazar Getty), reuniting Tommy with baby Elizabeth, at least I think that’s the baby’s name.

Lyle Lovett is a plant by Senator Robert McCallister (Rob Lowe) to impress Kitty (Calista Flockhart) with a romantic moment.

Saul (Ron Rifkin) gets his back up with Nora, when he thinks she is meddling into his newly acknowledged homosexuality.

Sarah Whedon (Rachel Griffiths) looks to be getting a new love interest.

Justin Walker (Dave Annable) is coming off the pain killers and is sweet again. He is so good at owning up to his “flaws” with Rebecca.

Holly Harper (Patricia Wettig)…well, her character is less brassy.

And the unlikable Lena continues to be unlikable.

Rebecca (Emily Van Camp) finally has some pleasant exchanges with her mother ~ the “other woman” of William Walker and Nora’s deceased husband.

And Kitty finally welcomes Rebecca as her sister and illustrates it by asking the half sister ~ via their mutual father’s extramarital affair ~ to be one of her bride’s maids. I liked the line where Kitty says after Rebecca is thrilled to be asked to be a part of the bridal party: Should we hug?

The wedding is next Sunday night.

BROTHERS AND SISTERS - The ABC Television Show

Wow, seven episodes into season two of a television show that I fell for hard last year when it debuted and I finally really liked an episode. Tonight, the writing had more substance… at least the actors seem to be able to get their acting chops into the material more than any other episode so far. The episode of Brothers and Sisters, “36 hours” showed what this show does best when it is allowed to from the writing – is relate to one another. I haven’t liked the predictability of the lines and the fluffy humor in past episodes. I prefer Matthew Rhys’ character in a relationship – or at least – trying to be.

Tonight, the writing was strong. The acting followed and I was in from the first segment prior to the first commercial knowing this episode was different and better. The writers were David Marshall Grant and Molly Newman. The director was David Paymer. The only minor writing bit that I didn’t like was with the scene of Tommy breaking up with Lena (I think that is her name). I thought Lena’s lines were “throw away” lines – just gratis type lines. Just lines to move the story along, not much thought put into them and bland all the way around.

Everything else was quite stellar for this little gem of a show.

I love how Sally Field got some lines again that let her talented acting shine through. Finally. She was especially great with the scene where she locked the door on Justin and also at the pool. Great scene at that family pool…almost as good as the kitchen setting for this Walker family.

The little scene with Robert McAllister and his daughter while ice skating was well-done. And the scene with Sally’s Nora and her brother, Saul Holden, baring the truth about his sexual orientation was the kind of scene that this show has made as its trademark.

I didn’t know that Kevin (Matthew Rhys) had not been talking to Jason McAllister. How sad for him. Matthew was great tonight, but then he is always good even when the writing leaves me wanting more substance.

Even Holly Harper was likeable tonight. It was nice to see Rebecca confide in her mother about Justin Walker.

And the writing where Justin unloads on each person within ear shot was outstandingly well-written and well-acted.

I just hope that the fluff, predictable lines don’t come back.

THAT CERTAIN SOMETHING – IT’S SO ENJOYABLE…

It happens for me with Dirty Dancing. But then I think of the magic of the music and the way Patrick Swayze moves. It happens for me with Robert Redford.

I fell for the television ABC show, Brothers and Sisters, last year when Kevin and Scotty were coupled. Kevin is played by Matthew Rhys of Cardiff, Wales. Read more about Matthew Rhys: http://ioanzone.19.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=114&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=60 Matthew is special as an actor, but I especially liked Luke MacFarlane, aka Scotty Wandell, son of Wally and Bertha, paired with Matthew’s Kevin. Then came Chad played by Jason Lewis for Kevin’s love interest. Okay… so I didn’t like Chad with Kevin. Jason just didn’t look comfortable being his gay character. Then came along Eric Winter as Jason MacAllister, a minister-brother of Rob Lowe’s character, Robert. Eric Winter – I like. But tonight we got a lot of looks at Luke MacFarlane’s Scotty again. And you know what, I sat there and said to myself “They just have something special”… when they are together on the screen. So Kevin didn’t let Scotty get the kiss he was going for – but they are going to try to be friends while Eric is a missionary in Malaysia. I say send Kevin to Malaysia - that would be so cool.

In the meantime, I like not knowing ahead of time what is going to happen, but I think it is obvious that Kevin’s loyalty to his boyfriend, Jason/Eric Winter is going to be tested. It just was set up in tonight’s episode. It is always good writing for Kevin’s character when Jon Robin Baitz is writing the script and tonight was no exception to that.

The magic that Kevin Walker (played by Matthew Rhys) and Scotty Wandell (played by Luke MacFarlane) lit up the screen with was undeniable. While I pine for those two to get back together, I am getting the impression that the new beau friend for Kevin may be very enjoyable.

Brothers and Sisters is a television show that I adore. My favorite actor is Matthew Rhys (from Cardiff, Wales) who plays a brother and a lawyer, Kevin Walker. And oh, by the way, Kevin is gay.

He has synergy with Matthew Rhys as he is good friends with him and bought a house with him at one time, where they shared a residence for 10 years. Oh, Well...I'm not getting my wish, but here is the beautifully handsome and photogenic Ioan Gruffudd who is currently starring as William Wilberforce in Amazing Grace, the movie. Just an excuse to include him here, before they announce who is going to be cast as the new love interest for Kevin Walker - Todd McCallister.

Oh, well...he is beautiful. And like I said, he is photogenic. You should see the other pictures I have stored in My Pictures folder of Ioan Gruffudd. They are fabulous. He is a year older than Matthew Rhys in real life. But then, Matthew Rhys is two years younger than his character, Kevin Walker.

OKAY, This is the beloved Kevin, aka Matthew Rhys, in Julie Taymor's Titus in 1999 as Demetrius, hanging upside down, I do believe. He can play tough, so let's see it, Kevin. Get an idea of what you'll put up with and how to keep 'em once your magnetism brings 'em over to you.

Kevin wanted to be on a date with Scotty, but Mom was able to manipulate him with guilt. This was before he has been obviously working out for the torso shots that have come after this was taken.

Kevin has been asked by his brother Tommy to let him and his wife use his sperm to have a baby (Tommy is sterile) and Kevin is the ONLY sibling, as well as including Scotty in that persuasion, who thinks this could present problems for the child, as Kevin put it "whose father is his gay uncle". And the subject has been brought up at the dinner table by sister Sarah.

Request President Bush to do the following immediately.

Dear President Bush:
President Omar al-Bashir continues to ignore diplomatic efforts to pressure him to end the genocide. More than 400,000 Darfurians have already lost their lives and over 2.5 million have been displaced. The time for the consciousness-building you proposed in your State of the Union address has passed; it is time for effective American leadership to end this genocide now. I urge you, President Bush, to please take the following steps immediately:
* Enact and enforce targeted sanctions against the leadership of the regime in Khartoum, including sanctions against the companies used by the leadership to finance the genocide.
* Implement all sanctions and measures for which you were given legal authority when Congress enacted, and you signed, the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act, including blocking from U.S. ports those ships that have transported Sudanese oil.
* Engage at the United Nations and with world leaders to enact the strictest targeted worldwide sanctions regime against Sudan’s leadership.
* Develop and implement, with our NATO allies, of a no-fly zone covering Sudanese military flights over Darfur. This could be accomplished by immobilizing Sudanese planes known to have taken part in illegal bombing missions.
* Engage with the United Nations to prepare and deploy a protection force for civilians in eastern Chad and the Central African Republic.
* Prepare for the deployment of a credible and effective international force to Darfur to protect vulnerable civilians and ensure conditions for effective humanitarian aid. This should include a request to Congress to pay the U.S.’s full share of UN peacekeeping dues.
* Produce a military contingency plan to respond to the potentially cataclysmic collapse of security and humanitarian aid networks in Darfur.

MATTHEW RHYS' KEVIN WALKER FINDS HIS WAY OUT - THANK GOD

My Favorite Television Show and a scene to break Kevin and Chad up.

I happen to love an American television show that began September 24, 2006. It airs on Sunday evenings, on ABC at 10:00 p.m. The show, Brothers and Sisters, is the creation of Jon Robin Baitz. Robbie Baitz is openly gay and committed to himself and to the viewers that he would not avoid dealing openly and honestly with all of the characters on the show which includes one adult gay male as a part of a large family. Kevin Walker is the character who plays the man who shows us into Robbie’s journey. He is played believably and exceptionally well by Welsh actor Matthew Rhys (pronounced rees). For many of us Matthew is our favorite actor on the show although the entire cast is richly talented. Kevin is an attorney. I know, I for one, love Kevin because of how Matthew Rhys portrays Kevin. Though Kevin is not gay in real life, he has no problem with all that is required to sincerely come across as gay with his acting and willingness to commit to all that Kevin is. Kevin was introduced to us last fall as having an ex-boyfriend’s picture in his law office, while meeting his new beau friend, Scotty Wandell. I love Kevin and Scotty together because they seem to have warmth that exudes from themselves to the other. It’s a kind of magical charm that sends sparks out from the television screen. There is a synergy between Matthew Rhys, who plays Kevin Walker, and Luke MacFarlane, who plays Scotty Wandell – where the sum of what each is becomes another whole entity when on the screen together. Sadly, Kevin and Scotty had some quirky little arguments and they have been estranged from one another except for one night when they had been set up as a blind date one for the other. However, this was also during a time when Kevin had been dating another man who was not openly gay and was squeezing Kevin back into the dreaded “don’t ask, don’t tell” invisible existence. And it hurts Kevin. Chad is soon to rock Kevin’s world. And NOT in a good way.

Below I have written (in a about 15 minutes) a fan fiction of the scene that Chad and Kevin take their tattered loose ends of a relationship and cut the ties that bind them. Falling in love is the easy part. Breaking up is the cruelest part of a love and life affair that built you up to let you down. I have two songs included here from Youtube that I have selected. I have included the lyrics for you to read how appropriate the song is for this multilayered chapter of Kevin’s love life. Of course, it is difficult to find a song with the right pronouns, you know, "he" in place of "she", so you’ll have to substitute in your thinking “he” for all of the “she” pronouns. But either one of these songs works for me, as background music for this little scene of emotional pain and dis-ease. I’ve been “there” more than once in my life. It just plain sucks you lifeless in one way and yet if you feel the pain – you KNOW you’re alive. So in that sense, I learned to be grateful for feeling the pain.

The Scene: It’s Over

Chad calls Kevin on Friday afternoon, when they had plans to go to dinner and spend the night together. It’s a rainy, very, very windy and gray day with ominous clouds. A storm is brewing.

Chad: Kev, I-I have to talk to you before tonight. Something is wrong and I … I don’t… want to hurt you.

Kevin: What, Chad, you’ve changed your mind.

Chad: It’s not that simple.

Kevin: Yeah, Chad it’s simple. Truth is truth. You’d rather run from it.

Chad: No. No. Kevin. I…I just have to sort things out. I’ve never felt this way before. And you’re the rea-

Kevin: Just… stop, Chad. You take my heart, work it around in your hands like I’m putty. Chew me up and spit me out. Look, Chad…

Chad: Kevin, don’t do thi-

Kevin: Don’t do what…tell you the truth?

Chad: I have real strong feelings for you.

Kevin: You’re rich Chad. What you have is confusion. Confusion on who you are. I know because, I’ve had my times. But…

Chad: Kevin, can I see you and talk this through.

Kevin: (firmly, with resolve) No. I wanted to love you. But the you I want to love is not there. You’re floundering around playing around with what Chad to be and while you’re doing that you’re playing around with my heart.

Chad: But Kev…

Kevin: Look, Chad, I hope you find the man inside you and let him out. I can’t take this stuff from you or anyone else anymore. It’s over Chad.

Silence

Chad: Kevin, are you sure that’s wha…

Kevin: Yeah…Chad. I’m sure.


Saturday morning, Kevin’s apartment. Kevin’s lying in bed after a restless, sad night under the covers. We see his face, which says it all… the frozen in emotional pain, looking like the life has been sucked out of him. A tear starts to well up in his eye, and slowing moves down his face as he lays on his side. The music has started of “I’m Gonna Find Another You” by John Mayer

This excerpt just below is from a love letter written in the book, Soul on Ice, by Eldridge Cleaver to Beverly Axelrod a San Francisco lawyer while he was in Folsom Prison. I think it is beautifully expressed as to how and why it is difficult to put ourselves out there on the limb to really give and take love.

“…The reason two people are reluctant to really strip themselves naked in front of each other is because in doing so they make themselves vulnerable and give enormous power over themselves one to the other. How awful, how deadly, how catastrophically they can hurt each other, wreck and ruin each other forever!...Better to maintain shallow, superficial affairs; that way the scars are not too deep, no blood is hacked from the soul. You beautifully – O, how beautifully!! – spoke...of ‘What an awesome thing it is to feel oneself on the verge of the possibility of really knowing another person...’ and...I do not believe that a beautiful relationship has to always end in carnage. I do not believe that we have to be fraudulent and pretentious,...I know that sometimes people fake on each other out of genuine motives to hold onto the object of their tenderest feelings. They see themselves as so inadequate that they feel forced to wear a mask in order to continuously impress the other.
