Nadal gains 3rd round at Madrid Masters

MADRID, Spain (AP)—Rafael Nadal moved within two wins of clinching the year-end No. 1 ranking, defeating Ernests Gulbis 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 Tuesday to reach the third round of the Madrid Masters.

Next up for Nadal, the 2005 Madrid champion, will be 15th-ranked Richard Gasquet. Gasquet overcame 23 aces by Mardy Fish to win 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-3.

Nadal was taken to four sets by Gulbis en route to the Wimbledon title, and Tuesday’s match was similarly troubling for the Spaniard.

Nadal has never been a fan of the Spanish capital’s high altitude and the extra speed it brings to the hard court. He had a difficult time keeping up with the Latvian as he stuck his shots, including a backhand down the line to break for 2-0 in the second.

In the deciding set, Gulbis had a break opportunity in the third game. But Nadal held and broke in the next game as Gulbis smashed a forehand long. Nadal served out and pumped his fists in relief at the end of his 2-hour, 22-minute opening match.

In other second-round matches, U.S. Open finalist Andy Murray advanced while 11th-seeded James Blake and 13th-seeded Fernando Verdasco lost.

Murray moved on when Simone Bolelli of Italy retired with an apparent shoulder injury while trailing 6-0, 2-1. Murray will next play Croatia’s Marin Cilic, who beat Verdasco 6-2, 6-3.

“I’ve been playing really, really well in practice the last few weeks, better than I was playing throughout the summer,” said Murray, who won his first Masters Series title in Cincinnati in August. “I’m probably mentally fresher now than the U.S. Open.”

Gilles Simon of France won 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to keep Blake winless in five appearances at the tournament. Simon saved four break points in the second set and converted two of his own before dominating the final set.

Blake has only a few tournaments left to qualify for the Masters Cup. He’s in ninth place in the standings for the top-eight event.

In first-round play, the winners included French Open semifinalist Gael Monfils, American qualifier Robby Ginepri, qualifier Marcel Granollers, Philipp Kohlschreiber, Jarkko Nieminen, Victor Hanescu, Robin Soderling, and Feliciano Lopez

RAFA NADAL IN SHANGHAI – SMALL CONTRACTURE & INFLAMMATION IN LEFT QUADS

The update on Rafa Nadal and his body allowing him to play in Shanghai this Sunday is that Rafa is a fighter and is planning to play.

But still...those of us who really support Rafa are concerned. How can we not be? We want him to be well. We want him to take care of his body for the long haul in his magnificent tennis career because we want the pleasure of watching him play for a long, healthy and successful tennis professional career.

Here is the article that I found at www.zimbio.com
...well it was in Spanish orginally......

RAFAEL NADAL MAY DEBUT IN THE MASTER SUNDAY
Nadal suffered a small contracture
Friday November 9, 2007

SHANGHAI (CHINA) .- Rafael Nadal evolves favorably after suffering a small contracture and the resulting inflammation of the left quadriceps, while training to debut on Sunday in the Masters Cup in Shanghai.

Angel Ruiz Cotorro, doctor of the Spanish Tennis Federation, confirmed the good news for the world's number two, which plays on Sunday French Richard Gasquet. "Rafa told me that it is already well," said the doctor from Barcelona.

"Rafa suffered a small contracture in his first training on Thursday, the result mainly of fatigue from the 16-hour trip from Spain, but it is much better today and has trained normally," said Cotorro.

"In theory, with 24 hours of rest and treatment, we are optimistic, and Sunday Rafa will almost certainly play," he added.

To Nadal, we have recommended anti-inflammatory and relaxation and stretching it meets your physiotherapist Maymó Rafael, and though they went through a scare, the issue seems to have been overcome.

In principle this injury should not assume biggest problem for the manacorense (I don’t know what manacorense means), which historically carries a chronic tendinitis in both rodilllas.

In addition to this problem, during 2007 Nadal suffered an issue in the left forearm that forced him to leave the Masters Series Cincinnati, Ohio.

I used the Google translation tool http://www.google.com/translate
to translate the article into English (above) that I found in Spanish (below). I took minor liberties with adjusting sentences that clearly had used incorrect words like “detente” when speaking about muscles and tightness.

THE FEAR FOR RAFA in SHANGHAI

Rafa is having phyical reactions in Shanghai prior to his Sunday match with the French player, Richard Gasquet. Personally and from a distance, I think he is playing too much and his body is shutting down. And the wear on the body of a 16 hour flight - not to mention all that "getting to the airport and in the airport" time - that we all know is also wearing - has got to take a toll on a body already calling for a break. How much can a body take?!

Here is the article that I found regarding Rafa's current physical status...

THE FEAR FOR RAFA!

THE TENISTA SPANISH THAT WILL SAVE THE REST FOR MASTERS CUP

Nadal gives the shock with a contracture Joan Solsona Shanghai According to the daily MARCA published Monday, Rafael Nadal had to leave the training last Thursday by a contracture in the quadriceps in his left leg. The tennis Balearic must save rest for two days and take anti-inflammatory to be able to play on the court on Sunday, at which time he is scheduled to meet the French Richard Gasquet in his debut in the Masters in Shanghai.

The positive news is that after conducting an initial exploration, Nadal was calmer. After an initial diagnosis, it appears that there will be no problems for the Manacorí’s debut, in his first match in the Masters Tournament. "On Sunday, Rafael Nadal should be fine to play with Richard Gasquet," said her doctor, Angel Ruiz Cotorro.

Rafael Nadal is not lucky in this tournament. Two years ago, in his first appearance, at the advice of trainers, Nadal had to withdraw before the start of Round Robin for a post-traumatic arthritis in the left foot. In the middle of training for this Thursday, the second working session being done since his arrival in Shanghai, the tennis Manacorí was forced to withdraw with strong discomfort in the left leg, which impeded him from moving from side to side on the court. It was exercised for a half-hour with Andy Roddick, who had hardly been able to subtract his serve.
