APPLE HAS A PROBLEM IF YOU ARE HUMANE

The world operates on the desire to keep poor people poor, so that slave conditions will be tolerated. Why pay USA workers good wages, health care, into pension plans, when corporations can go to places like China, where we can claim ignorance on the working conditions?

I don't believe "we" really want poor people to have better lives. How would we get the cheap labor to make our clothes, pick our fruit and vegetables, make our technology?

The New York Times: Apple’s iPad and the Human Costs for Workers in China
A portion from the above link's article:

In the last decade, Apple has become one of the mightiest, richest and most successful companies in the world, in part by mastering global manufacturing. Apple and its high-technology peers — as well as dozens of other American industries — have achieved a pace of innovation nearly unmatched in modern history.

However, the workers assembling iPhones, iPads and other devices often labor in harsh conditions, according to employees inside those plants, worker advocates and documents published by companies themselves. Problems are as varied as onerous work environments and serious — sometimes deadly — safety problems.

Employees work excessive overtime, in some cases seven days a week, and live in crowded dorms. Some say they stand so long that their legs swell until they can hardly walk. Under-age workers have helped build Apple’s products, and the company’s suppliers have improperly disposed of hazardous waste and falsified records, according to company reports and advocacy groups that, within China, are often considered reliable, independent monitors.

More troubling, the groups say, is some suppliers’ disregard for workers’ health. Two years ago, 137 workers at an Apple supplier in eastern China were injured after they were ordered to use a poisonous chemical to clean iPhone screens. Within seven months last year, two explosions at iPad factories, including in Chengdu, killed four people and injured 77. Before those blasts, Apple had been alerted to hazardous conditions inside the Chengdu plant, according to a Chinese group that published that warning.

“If Apple was warned, and didn’t act, that’s reprehensible,” said Nicholas Ashford, a former chairman of the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health, a group that advises the United States Labor Department. “But what’s morally repugnant in one country is accepted business practices in another, and companies take advantage of that.”

Apple is not the only electronics company doing business within a troubling supply system. Bleak working conditions have been documented at factories manufacturing products for Dell, Hewlett-Packard, I.B.M., Lenovo, Motorola, Nokia, Sony, Toshiba and others.

Current and former Apple executives, moreover, say the company has made significant strides in improving factories in recent years. Apple has a supplier code of conduct that details standards on labor issues, safety protections and other topics. The company has mounted a vigorous auditing campaign, and when abuses are discovered, Apple says, corrections are demanded.

And Apple’s annual supplier responsibility reports, in many cases, are the first to report abuses. This month, for the first time, the company released a list identifying many of its suppliers.

But significant problems remain. More than half of the suppliers audited by Apple have violated at least one aspect of the code of conduct every year since 2007, according to Apple’s reports, and in some instances have violated the law. While many violations involve working conditions, rather than safety hazards, troubling patterns persist.

“Apple never cared about anything other than increasing product quality and decreasing production cost,” said Li Mingqi, who until April worked in management at Foxconn Technology, one of Apple’s most important manufacturing partners. Mr. Li, who is suing Foxconn over his dismissal, helped manage the Chengdu factory where the explosion occurred.

“Workers’ welfare has nothing to do with their interests,” he said.

Some former Apple executives say there is an unresolved tension within the company: executives want to improve conditions within factories, but that dedication falters when it conflicts with crucial supplier relationships or the fast delivery of new products. Tuesday, Apple reported one of the most lucrative quarters of any corporation in history, with $13.06 billion in profits on $46.3 billion in sales. Its sales would have been even higher, executives said, if overseas factories had been able to produce more.

Executives at other corporations report similar internal pressures. This system may not be pretty, they argue, but a radical overhaul would slow innovation. Customers want amazing new electronics delivered every year.

“We’ve known about labor abuses in some factories for four years, and they’re still going on,” said one former Apple executive who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity because of confidentiality agreements. “Why? Because the system works for us. Suppliers would change everything tomorrow if Apple told them they didn’t have another choice.”

“If half of iPhones were malfunctioning, do you think Apple would let it go on for four years?” the executive asked.

iSlaves Working on the iPad: Signing 'No Suicide' Pledges
Monday, 02 May 2011
Source: macedonia online

Factories making sought-after Apple iPads and iPhones in China are forcing staff to sign pledges not to commit suicide, an investigation has revealed.

At least 14 workers at Foxconn factories in China have killed themselves in the last 16 months as a result of horrendous working conditions.
Many more are believed to have either survived attempts or been stopped before trying at the Apple supplier's plants in Chengdu or Shenzen.

After a spate of suicides last year, managers at the factories ordered new staff to sign pledges that they would not attempt to kill themselves, according to researchers.

And they were made to promise that if they did, their families would only seek the legal minimum in damages.

An investigation of the 500,000 workers by the Centre for Research on Multinational Companies and Students & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour (Sacom) found appalling conditions in the factories.

They claimed that:

* Excessive overtime was rife, despite a legal limit of 36 hours a month. One payslip showed a worker did 98 hours of overtime in one month, the Observer reported.
* During peak periods of demand for the iPad, workers were made to take only one day off in 13.
* Badly performing workers were humiliated in front of colleagues.
* Workers are banned from talking and are made to stand up for their 12-hour shifts.

The 'anti-suicide pledge' was brought in after sociologists wrote an open letter to the media calling for an end to restrictive working practices.

But the investigation revealed many of the workers still lived in dismal conditions, with some only going home to see family once a year.

One worker told the newspaper: 'Sometimes my roommates cry when they arrive in the dormitory after a long day.'

She said they were made to work illegally long hours for a basic daily wage, as little as Ł5.20, and that workers were housed in dormitories of up to 24 people a room.

In Chengdu, working between 60 and 80 hours overtime a month was normal, with many breaching Apple's own code of conduct with the length of their shifts.

And the investigation found that employees claimed they were not allowed to speak to each other.

FOR SALE: BACKBONES (MADE IN USA) FOR DEMOCRATS, INCLUDING PRESIDENT OBAMA

For one week running up to the very important New Hampshire primary, I was in New Hampshire volunteering for the campaign titled: Obama for America. Not my comfort zone to make the phone calls, go door-to-door, but I did it because I felt Barack Obama genuinely had a backbone. Because I was promised to be able to get into him speaking one day that week, and then getting there after going door-to-door right up to the time of the event, I was unable to get in, because the room was full and I had to sit in a room with the national press instead. I talked with Richard Wolffe briefly and had my picture taken with him by his friend. I watched Barack speak on a TV screen, while I sat with the press core which was reporting the campaign and rode the bus with Barack Obama.

.........................................................................................................................

So as a result of this broken promise by the campaign leader, I was given a hard copy ticket for this night in the Nashua, NH gym and sat right where Barack and Michelle entered that night. The spirit of promise in the “Yes We Can” speech that night has been buried. The poor, the middle class are the sacrificial lambs. General Electric is paying no taxes April 15, 2011. Hope and Change? Certainly hope free.

"Mike Elk has a nice companion piece to the New York Times story on General Electric paying no taxes after making $14 billion in profits, and in fact getting $3 billion in returns from the government. At the same time that the corporation isn’t giving one penny to the government for use of the commons, they are trying to exact wage and benefit cuts on their own workers." Dear President Obama,

As someone who used to support President Obama, I write to express my feelings of disappointment in the latest news.

Mike Elk has a nice companion piece to the New York Times story on General Electric paying no taxes after making $14 billion in profits, and in fact getting $3 billion in returns from the government. At the same time that the corporation isn’t giving one penny to the government for use of the commons, they are trying to exact wage and benefit cuts on their own workers.

Why are we middle class and poor being asked to compromise and do more than our part when the corporate USA "rich" get bail-outs from us, and pay NOT their fair share in taxes?

It is my understanding the poor women of D.C. just got not only the short end of the stick, but no "stick" at all in this latest "compromise". The short speech given by President Obama tonight didn't ring true for me. The Washington Monument in the background of the President's speech tonight was "theatre" that was forced and felt “un-genuine”.

From the President’s speech: "Largest Spending Cut in History" is not a cause for pride. Very sad to see President Obama lose his passion for justice.

A midnight deadline neared for a government shutdown. "I feel strongly that my Republican colleagues are wrong in trying to move toward deficit reduction solely on the backs of working families and the middle class – cutting education and head start, cutting community health centers, cutting the social security administration, cutting LIHEAP and other important programs," Sen. Bernie Sanders said. "In my view, with the wealthiest people in our country doing extremely well, the people on top should also be asked to contribute toward deficit reduction. Further, the idea that the Republicans are prepared to shut-down the government over the funding of women's health care is totally absurd."

I received the text in the email pasted below from my US RI Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and found the page to sign the petition unclear. Therefore I sent an email to Senator Whitehouse to this address ~ sheldon_whitehouse@whitehouse.senate.gov ~

Subject Line: I stand with saving lives of poor people and the middle class

I clicked the link to sign the petition sent from your office, but when I went to the page, it was unclear. Unclear because the four blanks meant for us to sign didn't designate what to put in the four blanks. I assume the first two blanks are for our first and last names. Just wanted to let you know it needs to be clear what you want in the four blank spaces to sign the petition.

Senator Whitehouse's email message ~

Dear Friend --

This is outrageous. What we are witnessing is a government being held hostage by Tea Party extremists. Extremists so intent on pushing their ideological agenda that they are willing to shut down the Federal Government.

We need to tell them no. Sign the petition to tell the Tea Party that the federal budget is not the place to push their social agenda.

This is no longer about spending. Last night Democrats agreed to $38 billion in budget cuts -- $5 billion more than the original Republican request -- and over three-quarters of the way toward their new request.

Today, Tea Party extremists came back to the table and revealed the real reason they've been holding up the federal budget: Planned Parenthood and Title X funding.

Let me be clear, by law no federal funds go to abortion. None. And they haven't since 1976. The funds in question provide cervical cancer screenings, diabetes testing, breast cancer exams and birth control for over 5 million low-income individuals each year. The Title X program has had such mainstream support that it was even signed into law in 1970 by President Nixon...who said that "no American woman should be denied access to family planning assistance because of her economic condition."

Title X funding has enjoyed such widespread support because Title X provides basic primary and preventive care for low-income women.

And yet this is the reason we haven't reached a budget deal, because Tea Party extremists think they can use the federal budget to shut down Planned Parenthood.

I hope I can count on you to stand with me and sign the petition to defend Title X women's health services.

I'm standing with a group of Senators who can sustain a filibuster to send a strong message: The federal budget will be about the federal deficit -- not about an extremist ideological agenda.

Will you join me? Sign the petition to stand up for women's basic health care.

I will let my fellow senators know that you are standing with us as we stand up for a federal budget that's focused on the deficit --- not extreme ideological agendas.

Best regards,

Sheldon Whitehouse
U.S. Senator

P.S. I voted to give up congressional salary during the shutdown, but the Republican members holding up the budget? They did not pass the congressional salary bill. They want to keep getting paid even though a shutdown forces Americans out of work. So I am giving back my salary to stand in solidarity with all Americans whose salaries are being held hostage by the Tea Party's agenda. Join me in standing up to the Tea Party.

FORGET GOD BLESS AMERICA…GOD BLESS THE HUMAN RACE AND THE UNIVERSE

What good is humanity if we don’t practice it?

I think of things that others don’t seem to be interested in. I get that feeling, anyway. Like what’s really important in life? What will matter to me in the end? Why do we claim peace is so important and yet we really don’t act like it is. I mean we have a War College where I live. Our national defense is all about the military and killing “over there” so we don’t have it going on here, the Bush administration claims. ...Which bothers me because it presumes that the people “over there” are less important than we are. When I was in college, until President Richard Nixon took it away, I had a loan for College called a National Defense Student Loan. That to me would be real defense – educating our young adults. Real defense would be having a national health care program for all citizens. Real defense would be a strong country which embraced our humanity by supporting the arts with a national budget to do so. Real defense would be actually caring about the babies born in this country. Real defense would be having a national foster care program that had a sufficient budget to do right by our children that had the audacity to be born into a family-less existence. …National foster care, so that the birth parents couldn’t avoid a state’s mandate by moving across the line.

The Things We Can Measure in Life
I had the thought that I wanted to say that the important things in life are the things that we do the least with and about. That the things that we measure in life versus those things that we can’t or don’t measure have an important difference that cries out metaphorically for our scrutiny. Then I went on basically about War versus Peace. War is where we put our money, lives and resourcefulness and working toward Peace gets barely a footnote of attention. The thing is we can measure how many bodies are dead, but we can’t measure how many hearts and human spirits have been lifted in a day. We can “measure” who is better at tennis, football, boxing, any sport. We can count money, so we know who is rich and who is poor. We can measure bigger and taller as if that makes something better merely by size. We can measure or judge who is pretty. We measure beauty by youthful looks. We can measure how much someone weighs. We measure success by the car that someone drives or the things they buy. We can measure the size of a penis. We can measure how many days we have lived. But in the end, what we can’t count or measure are the things of real human importance. Peace of mind, empathy, kind words, thoughts worthy of our goodness, how we made someone feel, joy, effort to mend a broken spirit, resilience when life has been desolate such as during genocide, how to convince a nation to be honest with its own mistakes and faults. We can’t measure the degree of how racist someone is.

Truth. Justice. Freedom. How much injustice does it take to rob someone of their sense of living in a just situation? How much truth does it take to diffuse lies that have been dished out during someone’s whole life? How many freedoms can be taken away before freedom itself is compromised so much that it can be said that freedom is an illusion or nonexistent? How much joy do you need? How much pain can someone take before he or she breaks? Can you measure these things? I don’t believe you can. And yet to me they are the things worth my time, attention and effort to address in life. Nothing that I can count or measure will comfort me if I should linger waiting for death to suck the breath from my mortal body. But these things can.

How Many Genocides Does It Take
It just seems to me that we have messed up this whole thing called life.

How many genocides does it take to get it right…To be willing to spend the political will to end genocide?

…………………………………………………………..

Protect Against Genocide by Aegis Trust
…………………………………………………………

Does one racist remark make you a racist? How many sharp, deliberately hurtful words does it take from a mother or father, how much narcissistic behavior will a mother or father act out to her or his children before it occurs to her or him that maybe she or he has the problem that she or he is reassigning to her or his children’s responsibility? (Okay, sorry for all the she/he inclusions.) How many killings and maimed bodies does it take before the war is deemed over? How many wars can we count? How many wars have brought a period of long, enduring peace or freedom?

We can count our money, our debt. We can count our weapons of war. We can count the burials. We could count the mentally ill soldiers that come back from wars if we wanted to. We can count our children. But can we count or measure our happiness? Can we count the cost of war in regards to the deaths of hopes, dreams and possibilities? The price of peace is not war. The price of peace is obviously harder than going to war. It’s easy to go to war. It’s not so easy to go to peace.

I’m happy. I’ve never known happiness, contentment, excitement or understanding of my family with my eyes and heart so free to see as I am at the present time in my life. Yes, I’m thoroughly disappointed in some things. I am disappointed that my mother has chosen to live her life in a pretend and phony way. I am disappointed that my family is broken and there is little reason to think that it will change. But I am comfortable with my acceptance of the way it is. I know who I am and I really like who I am. I am blessed with the passions that I have been given. I love life in a vibrant way while being creative and excited with my activities. I can’t change my mother. I can’t make others be happy.

I am personally happy and at the same time I am thoroughly upset with my country…President Bush and his unwillingness to see truth even when it is directly facing him. I am thoroughly disappointed with a country that is divided on what is truly important and what we have in common with not only one another, but the rest of the planet’s people. I don’t like the phrase “God Bless America” because I think that is too small of an idea. I prefer God Bless the Human Race. God Bless All Things. Who are we that we go around only asking God to Bless US? Pretty self-important and in denial over that fact that we aren’t “all that”. It bothers me that “We the People” have given over our responsibilities as keepers of our constitutional rights to unbalanced and heartless elected politicians and to the paid lobbyists who operate in Washington, D.C. without the bright light of the press breathing down their necks. Apathy bothers me. But, I can do what I can do. And I do.

The following song’s lyrics came to mind as I was writing:

Rolling Home

Lyrics by Eric Andersen

Truth, with all it’s far out schemes,

Lets time decide what it should mean;

It’s not the time but just the dreams that die.

And sometimes when the room is still,

Time with so much truth to kill,

Leaves you by the window sill so tied

Without a wing, to take you high,

Without a clue to tell you why.

Now, I just want to keep my name, not bother anybody’s game

Without ideas of gold or fame or insane heights.

I don’t want a lot of money, I don’t want a playboy bunny,

Just a love to call me honey late at night,

In my arms, by my side, in my arms late at night.

Well, I see the ones who crawl like moles

Who for a front would trade their souls,

A broken mirror’s the only hole for them;

And for you who’d exchange yourselves,

Just to be somebody else,

Pretending things you never felt or meant;

Hey, you don’t live what you defend,

You can’t give so you just bend.

Now if you care what people think,

Like they supplied some missing link;

They’ll just stand back and watch you sink so slow.

They’ll never help you to decide,

They’ll only take you for a ride,

After which they’ll try and hide the fact that they don’t know

What you should do, where you should go,

There’s nothing big I want to prove,

No mountains that I need to move,

Or even claim what’s right or true for you.

My sights, my songs are slightly charred,

You might think they miss their mark,

But things are only what they are and nothing new

But for me, I think they’ll do,

Well, I can see a king and queen, a beggar falling at my feet;

They all must see the same sad dreams at night;

Futility and senseless war, pit the rich against the poor,

While cause is buried long before the fight

For what was wrong, for what was right,

It’s just the strong, who ever says what’s right.

Chorus:

But I don’t know, I ain’t been told,

Ev’rybody wants a hand to hold.

They’re so afraid of being old,

So scared of dying, so unknown

And so alone, rollin’ home.

The Great Mandala

We say we want peace. We have never really given peace a chance. Peace surely requires and deserves more complex work than war. And we can’t really believe that it’s peace that war renders. Peace is harder than war. And it requires more ability and will than our so-called free nations have illustrated during the race to be human. We get what we work on. I’ll be bold and say that we work at war much harder than we work toward a peaceful planet.

all the things we used to blame on the devil

BARACK OBAMA
Why him and not Hillary? Well, I have my rational, thoughtful reasons. And then there is a reason that may not be so reasonable, but it's still important. I feel lifted up by his attitude and the way he exudes excitement and his expression of simple democratic values of caring for people that have been forgotten for way too long. We need to get back to "the people". He inspires. Hillary doens't affect me in that way. She is so very talented, gifted and needed. But, so much, we need a leader who can rally our lost hope and excitement in our basic values. We need charged up.
I saw Diane Sawyer's "Waiting for the World to Change" 20/20 story in Camden, New Jersey, Friday night. How depressing was that?! You just couldn't turn away from the spirit that these children were having so little support from their community and country. The little kindergarten boy who could count the 3 wheels on a tricycle - but who couldn't say how many meals we have a day because for him there were NEVER 3 meals a day. The little girl who in the short time that Diane knew her had eyes and a spirit that went from youthful exuberance to eyes that were lifeless and a spirit that had been drained. The young man who lived in a drug infested Camden neighborhood and worked a job to help the family through high school. You had to see where they lived to get the impact of his story. He slept on the floor with the bugs crawling. He so wanted to make his dad proud and be able to graduate high school in a place that it was most uncommon. He worked harder than you or I ever did to get that diploma. After much fear that it wouldn't come to pass for him, it did. We must care about the poor in our country.
