RAFAEL NADAL MAKES TENNIS SPECIAL. ATP LIVE STREAMING UNRELIABLE

When TV doesn't air tennis matches, or the streaming stalls or completely doesn't work - and the "paid for" sites are the most unreliable - youtube is the place to see the sport of tennis. And customer service on ATP's live streaming site is not that helpful to the individual. Recently so many fan-uploaded tennis matches or parts of matches have been removed from Youtube. My personal opinion is that this hurts tennis. The money that the tennis copyright holders are trying to save for themselves to make surely isn't diminished by uploading tennis to Youtube or other similar sites. We want to see it live, but failing that, Youtube tennis viewing promotes the sport, peaks and nurtures interests and only helps those who want more people to tune into tennis so that they can make money.

Youtube in effect is free advertising for the corporate tennis administrations. But they delete the tennis youtube videos continually thinking they are protecting their money-making ventures. Roland Garros deleted videos continually during the French Open.

Rethinking their philosophy and method to make money and allowing videos to be put on Youtube and Daily Motion should be allowed so that more people are brought into the viewing tennis population.

I actually have bought the passes to ATP (which most of the time doesn't work) and Wimbledon. Wimbledon by far is the better. I couldn't get the live matches (probably because of too much "traffice"), but the downloads of entires matches are fantastic. The ATP was having technical difficulty at the Toronto final last Sunday, so the entire match was unavailable. And ESPN was knocked out by a thunderstorm in my area.

ATP doesn't upload entire matches of the current tournaments, just selected matches of the past. And of those, I have always had difficulty getting these matches to play all the way to the end.

Yesterday, I was so surprised to be able to view the entire match on the ATP site of Rafael Nadal v Nicolas Lapentti. This only proves it is not my computer. It probably means that since the match was televised the traffic on the ATP site was so much less and I was able to to have success. ATP is better than TV in that the change overs are shown and there are no commercial breaks.

Nadal to surpass Federer at the top

Rafael Nadal will replace Roger Federer at the top of the world rankings this month after the second-seeded Spaniard moved past Nicolas Lapentti 7-6 (7/3) 6-1 in the quarter-finals of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters on Friday.

Nadal has won his last five tournaments and if the 22-year manages to claim the championship at this hardcourt event, he will overtake Roger Federer as the number one player in the world.

The top-ranked player for a record 235 weeks, Federer had the opportunity to keep Nadal at bay a bit longer had he reached the semi-finals here, but a third-round loss to Ivo Karlovic on Thursday ended that possibility. By reaching the semi-finals, Nadal will become number one on August 18 and he is guaranteed to move atop the rankings on August 11 by finishing as the runner-up.

Nadal, who is an ATP-best 64-7 this season and is riding a 32-match win streak, connected on 67 percent of his first serves and saved all three break points. He had two break opportunities and capitalised on both. Nadal will meet third-seeded Novak Djokovic in a semi-final clash. Djokovic downed Latvia's Ernests Gulbis 6-3 6-4, in the quarters.

"I thought that I was serving much better, and day after day I'm getting stronger in the segment of my game, which is really important coming up to the final stages of the tournament," said Djokovic, who improved to 43-10 on the season, 22-5 on hard courts.

Djokovic won his first Grand Slam title earlier this year at the Australian Open and appeared destined to challenge Federer and Nadal atop the rankings, but his season has taken a downturn after a disappointing second-round exit at Wimbledon and a quarter-final loss to Andy Murray in Toronto last week. The 21-year-old Serb is likely excited about facing Nadal on a hard court. A win would exact a small measure of revenge for Djokovic, who twice failed to beat Nadal on clay this spring with the number two ranking hanging in the balance.

On the opposite side of the draw, Karlovic built on his win over Federer when he upended unseeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6 (8/6) 7-6 (7/3) in a quarter-final. The hard-serving Croat - who leads the ATP with 657 aces this year - came into this tournament on a three-match losing streak, but has regained the form that led him to a title at Nottingham earlier this year.

Karlovic will face the eighth-seeded Andy Murray, who overcame a slow start to post a 2-6 6-2 6-1 win over veteran Spaniard Carlos Moya, the 2002 champion.

Murray looked uninspired in losing the first set to the 31-year-old and was broken in the first game of the second. From that point, however, he won 12 of the last 15 games and looked more like the player who recently reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon and Toronto.

"I mean, to go two breaks down, a set and two breaks down, would have been tough to come back from," Murray said. "But, you know, it happens sometimes in tennis when you're feeling confident and you know your opponent hasn't maybe played as well as he can throughout the year."

Nadal captures No 1 tennis ranking

I watched the match on ESPN2 and also on the ATP website when TV went to commercials or when I wanted to see something again. TV is always ahead of the ATP streaming by a couple points it seems.

Well, Rafa WON! He is number 1! What a night in Cincinnati for Rafa. It happened on hard court and it happened in the USA. How Special is that - that where before he has not found such Rafa-success, he showed the USA and the World that he has arrived! Nicolas Lapentti gave Rafa a great match to become number 1. Rafa had to earn it. The ESPN commentators thought Rafas nerves were affecting his play. I don't know. Lapentti was fantastic! Rafa did seem to bring more magic from Set 1's tie break on. Some of his points were so Rafa-like! But Lapentti had some magical points too.

So wonderful for Rafa!

First the journalist explains the match and Rafa answered pretty much the same that he did in the interview for TV.

The journalist asked where he would celebrate the title because in the Bermabeu there is big Feast (Real Madrid is the winner of la league and Rafa is a supporter of Real Madrid).

Rafa said that unfortunately he couldn't see anything and he was celebrating his title with a dinner in Hamburg with his team and friends from Mallorca, nothing special but with illusion to come back to home because this year he has spent little time at home.

The journalist commented about the bad moment that everyone was seeing him 5-1 down and the trainer giving him a massage and the gesture of pain in his face and the nodding of his head.

He said the he felt a pull in the right isquiotirial (a muscle of the leg).

The journalist asked if in this moment he thought about the retirement.

"I doubted" Rafa said "I doubt because I was scared and because how would the match go , if I was not at 100% against Federer ~ it would be silliness to keep on and with Roland Garros in one week, and you don't know how the leg would react, I saw that the leg was like a stone but the leg didn't fail me. I have had a muscular spasm before and the leg fails you in this case. I didn't notice that it failed me and this calmed down me a little bit."

The journalist told him that it would be a pleasure to win a Tournament like that and asked if this moment he felt tired.

"I felt tired in minute one after I finished, when I went to the chair before to pick up the prize, I felt all the tiredness, I suppose for the tension of yesterday that it was lot, and today the tension of what happened to me in the leg, I went down quickly (laughing) but well, very happy for everything."

What did Federer say to you when you were alone?

I said to him, "I'm sorry", and he said me, "well-played and have good days at home and that we see each other in Paris."

They were talking about how the match was and Rafa answered the same than in other interviews and later they were talking about the football in Spain and about the conflict that the President of the Spanish Federation and the players have. And about what Rafa will do those days off in Mallorca, if he will go fishing or golf?

Rafa said that the first is to go do a resonance and check if his leg is fine and then he wants to play golf and fish with friends, although he has not much time because he'll go to Paris, Thursday, May 22.

Rosana: Sensational, and besides, these matches with Roger Federer are always special but we are starting to get used that be 5-1, you came back..., you win with the first service...., then all equals in the second set....

Rafa: Yes, the truth is that recent matches have been much more strange than usual, both the MC as here. Many breaks, which is not usual .. I suppose that is the respect that we have each other, no?

Nadal Wins Hamburg Battle for 26th Career ATP Title

© Getty Images Second-seeded Spaniard Rafael Nadal captured his third ATP clay-court title of the year Sunday with a 7-5 ,6-7(3), 6-3 victory over four-time champion and ATP World No. 1 Roger Federer of Switzerland in the final of Masters Series Hamburg presented by EON Hanse. Hamburg Photo Gallery Nadal becomes only the third player since 1990 to win the three ATP Masters Series titles on clay Monte Carlo, Rome and Hamburg in his career. The only players to accomplish the feat are former World No. 1s Gustavo Kuerten and Marcelo Rios. Federer started the match strongly with breaks of serve in the second and sixth games for a 5-1 lead, but Nadal clawed his way back by winning six successive games to clinch the opening set 7-5 in 61 minutes. The pair exchanged breaks of serve early in the second set, but it was Federer who moved into a 5-2 lead before Nadal broke back in the ninth game. The writing appeared on the wall for Federer, but the Swiss regained his composure and calmly sealed the tie-break to take the pairs 16th career meeting to a deciding set. Q: Well done. It was a wonderful match, very close. What were the little things that made the difference between win and lose?

NADAL: Thank you, that was an important win for me. It was a strange match. 5:1, 7:5, 1:0 with break, 5:2, 5:5, 5:5 0:40. Tiebreak, easy ball for 3:0. And it was tough to win the third. Strange match, for sure. But the important thing is, I was focussed all the time. Roger had some important mistakes in the first set, that helped me a lot. I started the match playing bad. It was tough for me, after yesterday it was tough in the beginning. I felt something in the leg, a little bit pain. It was difficult for me to concentrate. But later I felt a little bit better. I think I played a very good 3. set.

Q: You seemed to move better after having treatment?

NADAL: Yes, a little bit better. I took some antiflammatory, so it was a bit better. I didn't know what it was when I was running, I felt something. That was tough, but I beat a very good player. I am very happy.

Q: How important was it to win the last tournament before Roland Garros?

NADAL: The most important thing is to win Hamburg, not the last tournament before Roland Garros. This tournament is very important, it was the only Masters Series I hadn't won on clay. It was an important tournament, not only Masters Series, because Barcelona is important too, no, Nicola? (laughs)

I'm happy for that, for sure that will give me more confidence for Roland Garros.

Q: Is the clay in Hamburg very different from the clay in Roland Garros, Monte Carlo, Rome?

NADAL: It is a little bit different.

Q: Was it easier for you today, because the conditions were better?

NADAL: For sure it was better for me with the sun. The court was a little bit faster than yesterday, and that is important for my game, for sure.

Q: Was your body feeling the aches from yesterday's match, the 2 hours?

NADAL: Sure, I was a little bit tired. But it's not only the body. Mentally it is tough, too, because it was a lot of tensions yesterday, a lot of pressure. Today it was tough when I was coming on court. But later everything changed.

Q: You said it was a strange match. But in Monte Carlo you came back from 0:4. Do you think Roger is afraid of you?

NADAL: No, I don't think so. The last two matches were some of the most strange matches between Roger and me. But you know, when you had 16 matches against each other, some have to be strange.

Q: Level wise, did you play better here or in Monte Carlo?

NADAL: Different. I don't know. It's close, but when I arrived here, I had different feelings mentally. In Monte Carlo, I didn't win a tournament for 8 months, and here I won 2 tournaments before. I played with more confidence here, but I played a very good tournament there as well, for sure.

Q: You beat the two top players, Djokovic and Federer, is that important for you?

NADAL: For sure it's important to beat the no. 1 and the best of this year. With this result, I'm already inside of the Masters Cup. That's my first goal. I am happy for that. I continue to be the no. 2, but closer to the no. 1.

Q: What do you believe is the future of this tournament here and did the players do enough to support the tournament?

NADAL: This tournament has a lot of support from the players. I am one of them. For sure this tournament deserves to be a Masters Series, but you never know. The top chief of the ATP wants to change the tennis. You never know what will go on, but hopefully it will continue like this.

Q: Federer said you are very good on the returns. Can you say something about your level of returns today?

NADAL: I was playing well, more inside the court. I am happy how I returned. It's tough to read his serve, because he can change the ball at the last moment, so I'm happy.

Q: What is the most difficult thing playing against Roger and playing against Novak?

NADAL: It's always a different match. Both are very difficult. Always with Roger it's more special.

Q: It seemed that yesterday's match was tougher?

NADAL: Different match, I don't know if tougher or easier.

Q: Do you take a rest now to get ready for the French Open?

NADAL: Two days off, Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday, I want to practice a bit in Mallorca.

Q: You are optimistic about your fitness?

NADAL: Yes, I did a test in the medical. There was something, but it was small. I think I will do another check tomorrow. I think if I played all the match like this it can't be a very important injury.

Birthday bashing for Murray

Happy returns were in short supply for Andy Murray at the Hamburg Masters as he was predictably outclassed 6-3 6-2 by an imperious Rafael Nadal on his 21st birthday.

Despite showing flashes of the form that saw him dispatch Dmitry Tursunov and Gilles Simon earlier this week, and which suggested he was getting to grips with clay, the undisputed king of the surface was simply too good.

Murray began strongly by holding serve to love in the opening game, but an horrific smash into the net set the tone for his next attempt as Nadal gratefully accepted the first of two break points.

At the same event where he badly injured his wrist last year, the Scot appeared to be troubled by a left knee problem and had no answer to his opponent's fearsome and unerringly accurate hitting in the early stages.

The British number one saved a first set point on his serve in the ninth game, but two weak forehands into the net offered second and third chances to Nadal - the latter converted when the birthday boy volleyed long to concede the first set 6-3.

Murray immediately hit back, however, to claim a first break in the opening game of the second set, but Nadal instantly got back on terms to reassert his superiority.

Nadal clinched a second break in the fourth game, sealed with a looping forehand up the line which brushed the chalk, to move into an ominous 3-1 lead.

The Spaniard had a first match point on Murray's serve in the eighth, and although that was saved, another forehand into the net put an end to the Briton's preparations for Roland Garros.

Nadal, who has now won all three of the pair's meetings, will face compatriot Carlos Moya in the quarter-finals.

Q: Are you more pleased with your game today than yesterday?

NADAL: Yes, sure, I'm much better now. I played much better than yesterday, practicing today morning. For sure, it is 50% better. I had more confidence today, feeling the ball much better and for sure playing more inside the court, having more control with the forehand, serving better too. So, it was a good match for me.

Q: What do you think was different to the previous meetings with Andy?

NADAL: It's always tough matches with Andy. Especially when he's playing well on hard court. If I am playing well on clay then I have more chances to beat him than if I play him on hard. Anyway, he is a very talented player. He can play, go to the net, play from the baseline, he can do everything. He had some mistakes. So, I beat him.

Q: So are you close to your best level?

NADAL: I don't know where my best level is. I am fine, I am playing well. That is the most important thing. I don't know if I'm close to my best level because you never know what is your best level. But I'm happy how I played today and plan to continue to play better tomorrow.

Q: How good do you think he can become on a clay court?

NADAL: He needs more tournaments I think, more practice. For sure, he can play well because his ball is not very flat. He has good control with the forehand, he serves well. He can go to the net, can slice the ball. If he continues to improve, he has a good chance to have a very good tournament in Roland Garros or in Monte Carlo, Rome, Hamburg.

Q: You fought very well, so is it okay with the feet?

NADAL: Yes. I'm fine. I don't feel 100% perfect because I feel it a little bit, but for sure it's enough.

Q: What caused the blister in Rome? The surface?

NADAL: No, I had the blister. The problem was the final in Barcelona. I didn't know when I was playing but during the night when I woke up at six in the morning to go to Rome, I tried to put the foot on the floor and I couldn't.
