HEATH LEDGER, NICK DRAKE, TERRY GILLIAM, THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS

Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
is opening in New York City and Los Angeles Christmas Day
but no plans by Sony Pictures Classics
to open it wide at the present time.

This the final movie with Heath Ledger. He died before the movie was completed. And the movie was finished anyway to honor Heath.

Fly lyrics:

Please give me a second grace. Please give me a second face.
I've fallen far down, the first time around, now I just sit on the ground in your way.

Now if it's time to recompense for what's done, come, come sit down on the fence in the sun.
And the clouds will roll by and we'll never deny- it's really too hard for to fly.

Please tell me your second name. Please play me your second game.
I've fallen so far for the people you are, I just need your star for a day.

So come, come ride in my streetcar by the bay
for now I must know how fine you are in your way.
And the sea sure as I, but she won't need to cry for it's really too hard for to fly.

There is a wonderful interview by Theresa of Nicola Picorini, the Director of Photography of Heath Ledger's final movie, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus at imaginariumofdrparnassus.com

Here is a small portion:

Theresa: You worked with Heath Ledger on Sin Eater (The Order), Brothers Grimm and The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus. What was he like to work with? I know that he was very interested in directing, camera angles, and all areas of movie making. Did he make suggestions to you at any time?

Nicola: I had the good fortune to meet Heath back in 2001 on the prep of the Sin Eater in Rome. We quickly became good friends and then we became brothers. Actually better than brothers. A brother is someone “forced on you” whether older of younger, is not your choice, either you find him or he arrives and you learn to accept him and eventually love him, but you do not pick each other. Me and Heath, we picked each other, and strangely enough he was the older, wiser brother. He had a wisdom and a depth far beyond his years. And, his curiosity was endless, he was like a sponge. If something interested him he would soak in it and never be satisfied till he would understand it and grasp the essence of it. His generosity matched his hunger for knowledge.

At first his interest in the technicalities of the shoot was motivated by his desire of having as much control of his acting, within what I call the “optical stage”, as possible. He understood very early on that there is a big difference between acting for a tight close up or for a wide shot and when we worked on Brothers Grimm he immediately embraced our style of shooting with wide lenses. He loved the special relation that a 14mm a few inches from your face can offer you. Before every set up he would come to peek in the eyepiece. He often wanted to have the on-board monitor turned toward him during rehearsals to make sure to learn the space available. He was a quick learner. He often made suggestions, always asked questions, never took anything for granted or with supponence.

Not only he was interested in directing, he directed. We shot a music video together (Ben Harper’s “Morning Yearning”) and it was a pleasure from beginning to end. He knew exactly what he wanted, what he needed and at the same time, he was always humble and listened to anyone who would step forward with a sensible idea. He was a volcano of ideas. He had this deep passion for Nick Drake’s music and life and I was lucky enough to be included in his process of finding a way to tell the story and put together a movie. After the shooting of Parnassus we were supposed to take off and follow Nick Drake’s footsteps in that trip to Morocco that supposedly changed his life. Heath’s idea was still brewing, but he felt that, that trip was the key to the storytelling.

Another project we had was to make something about gypsy music (he discovered it while in Prague filming Brothers Grimm and he fell in love with it.) He got Ben Harper involved and excited about it. It would have been yet another wonderful adventure. There is so much he was capable of and unfortunately none of this will happen. Sometimes I feel that we should finish what he started, but at the same time I know that without his genius nothing would do it justice…

* This part made my eyes freeze on the words and my heart sink all at the same time.

**This will make me search gypsy music on youtube.

I only discovered Heath’s work after he left his mortal body and now I am somewhat obsessed with learning more and more about him. It is Heath that inspired me to be on this quick learning curve to make youtube videos…the majority about Heath in his movies.

As I posted last night on my blog ~ from the song A Case of You:

I remember that time you told me you said
“Love is touching souls”
Surely you touched mine
‘Cause part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time
Oh, you’re in my blood like holy wine
You taste (so bitter and) so sweet

Oh I could drink a case of you darling
And I would still be on my feet
I would still be on my feet.

I so hope we can get The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus to open wide in the USA.

Mutchi and Christopher,

The love of those who feel a bond with Heath is a wondrous thing. Thank you for the heartfelt hug….feel me hugging you back.

If we could get all the people on the planet together in one place who love Heath, surely world peace would find the catalyst there and be on its way.

There is something magical about Heath Ledger that transcends his death. Heath and those who love and appreciate his spirit and works ~ and those who have yet to discover his work ~ deserve to have The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus released wide.

The website for TIoDrP

has this on its front page:

A Film by Terry Gilliam
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Opens December 25th
In New York and Los Angeles
Opens Nationwide January 8th

Is this true?

Are we really going to have Dr Parnassus open wide?

Here’s the announcement, however, please note three important things, nationwide release IS NOT wide release. That means it will open in states other than NY and California across the country, but that doesn’t necessarily mean every state and definitely NOT every city. It also is a platform release which means that it will be released STARTING January 8, 2010 to a few cities a week or so and that will continue on for a while. Also it will ONLY be in arthouse theaters, not in your local big theaters or multiplexes. It’s explained a little more thoroughly in the announcement we made about it at this link: HERE So, we continue to work toward a wider release and to see it at our local multiplexes.

Sandra, for me it´s a pride to be part of your blog with one of my humble and simple videos. As I said in the comments on YouTube, this is the video that means more to me, and where I put all my heart and soul.

Thank you for everything!

Carla

Dear Carla,

I am sitting here trying to discipline myself in my writing (hopefully a book) and I heard the email sound for incoming messages...it was your comment above being "announced" to me.

I can tell that your heart and soul is in this video of Heath with Heath's passion for Nick Drake and his music. "Humble and simple"...maybe to you, but what we who "know" you and your feelings for Heath see is deeper than that. It is a "knowing" of the soul. A precious gift of Life.

Hug,

Sandra
