1950 - THE GAME OF THEIR LIVES ~ 2010 - WORLD CUP in SOUTH AFRICA

This post is inspired by a World Cup soccer match Saturday, June 12, 2010, in South Africa between England and USA. Score: 1 - 1. Lucky USA in that England's goalkeeper, Green, dropped the ball, then it went into the net. I know nothing about soccer, except the little I see in bits on TV and the movie, starring Gerard Butler, The Game of Their Lives.

John "Clarkie" Souza-Benavides (b. July 12, 1920 in Fall River, Massachusetts) is a former soccer player who earned 14 caps and scored 3 goals for the United States men's national soccer team, and played in the U.S. team's historic 1–0 victory over England in the 1950 FIFA World Cup. He was selected for a World Cup All-Star team by the Brazilian sports newspaper Mundo Esportivo, and remained the only American player ever selected to a World Cup All-Star team until Claudio Reyna in 2002. He is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

Edward Souza-Neto (Born: September 22, 1921 - Fall River, Massachusetts; Died: May 19, 1979 - Warren, Rhode Island) was an American soccer player who earned 6 caps and scored 1 goal for the United States men's national soccer team, and played in the U.S. team's historic 1–0 victory over England in the 1950 FIFA World Cup. Souza was also a member of the U.S. team for the 1948 Summer Olympics. He played his club soccer with Ponta Delgada F.C.

ANOTHER GEM OF A MOVIE

I don't know how I missed the movies when they came out that I have recently discovered. Maybe, I wasn't paying attention. Or maybe, the movies were not released wide. But the common denominator is that Gerard Butler chose to be in them.

This is a wonderful movie which is based on a true story. An ensemble movie, which features Gerard Butler in a lead role.

You can check movies out for free at your public library.

At the end of the movie, we get to see some of the original football players.

The film details the story of the 1950 US soccer team which, against all odds, beat England 1-0 in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil during the World Cup. The story is about the family traditions and passions that shaped the players who made up this team of underdogs. Many of the teammates were from The Hill neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri.

Friendship, Fun and Saving Lives: Formula For A Perfection Day

16th of December 2008

The day finally arrived!! - Rafa's friends and Iker's friends have met for the second year in a row for a great cause. The objective: help those in desperate need of assistance to stop Malaria from killing more children.

A magnific reason to put together this event, and celebrate life with some of the best sportsmen in the world. The spirit of competition and classic score system were not part of the evening and instead they replaced it with fun and entertainment for an incredible crowd, which witnessed a very special moment in Rafa's and Iker's lives. This is how they split up the teams:

Rafa Nadals team: Carlos Moyá, Jorge Lorenzo, Raúl González, Almudena Cid, Carlos Sastre, Marcos Senna, Novak Djokovic, Sergio García, Carlos Sainz, Sete Gibernau and Samuel Eto'o.

Iker Casillass team: David Ferrer, Carmen Jordá, Feliciano López, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Santi Cazorla, Sergio Ramos, Alberto Contador, Dani Sordo, Alvaro Bautista, Kanouté and Fernando Alonso.

Madrid's El Palacio de los Deportes was the stage for 3 contests: A kart race, a tennis match (one set) and a soccer match which had Rafa Guerrero as the referee. At the end of the encounters, it was Iker's friends who got away with the victory after Dani Sordo (in the goalkeepers team) won an exciting kart race against Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso.

SINGING TOGETHER

IS A HEALING THING.

I so love this. I remember when I was in elementary through high school going to the basketball games that my dad coached and the whole audience actually sang the National Anthem. Now, I am the only one who sings at public events that I can hear. Everyone just stands and listens. No singing.

This is so wonderful to see this video. There is a video of this song, You'll Never Walk Alone, being sung by a soloist at the beginning of the soccer game, but then the whole audience takes the song over. Here the song is spontaneously sung at the end of the game by the people in the stands. What a great song to sing together. We could heal the world with song.
