JUNE 15 - 24, 2009 - REPORTS FROM DARFURI REFUGEE CAMP

President Obama Puts Darfur On Back Burner

Leadership by President Obama regarding the Darfur crisis gets a 1 on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being little to no leadership.

“It is not acceptable to put that many people’s lives at risk,” Obama said about the Darfuris and the expelled humanitarian agencies for the Internally Displaced People of Darfur. “We need to be able to get those humanitarian organizations back on the ground.” ...President Obama

And yet, those agencies that were expelled March 4, 2009 are not "back on the ground" in Sudan.

Talk is useless, President Obama, as long as it reaps no Change We Can Believe In.

The Stop Genocide Now team is on the ground now to send us reports from a Darfuri refugee camp just over the border in Chad. November 2005 was their first trip. This is their eighth trip.

Beginning on June 15th, i-ACT (interactive-activism) will connect you with Darfur refugees through the web for ten consecutive days. Each day delve deeper into the lives of this community by watching videos, viewing photos, reading and commenting on blog posting and taking action to bring peace and justice to Darfur. Being part of i-ACT allows you to develop a personal relationship with Darfuris and inspires us all to continue acting for each individual who has survived the horrors of Darfur. i-ACT will bring you innovative and interactive live programming for World Refugee Day on Thursday June 18th and June 20th. Join us, be i-ACT.

They will be visiting some of the people I talk about in this post

Action: World Refugee Day - Saturday June 20, 2009
Posted by Katie-Jay on June 14th, 2009

World Refugee Day (WRD) is a time of celebration. To honor the survivors who were forced fled their homes and sought refuge and safety from violence. To recognize them as part of us. WRD is also a time to reflect on the root causes of mass atrocities and solutions to bring those who were forced to run back home. It should be a day of action, as action is the very best way to honor and celebrate the sorrows and triumphs of humanity by connecting with humanity in the toughest of times.

On Saturday June 20, 2009, World Refugee Day will be celebrated around the world in internally displaced person’s camps and refugee camps throughout the world. This year’s theme is Real People, Real Needs. We ask you can be part of this day and to bring celebration and action into you life.

ACTIONS:

1. Participate in a live web streaming from Chad refugee camps. Follow our team as they capture the daily life and special WRD events. Ask questions via the live chat, and spread the word via your online social networks. Stay tuned in here for the link!

2. In solidarity with and in honor of the theme, Real People, Real Needs, fast from midnight to midnight for WRD - join here.

3. During the World Refugee Day web streaming, invite a few friends and family to your home to share in the experience. The live streaming and chat offer the opportunity for you to actively deepen the relationship between your community and refugees. Making our very large world personal is part of the long term solution that can create peace, justice and equality.

Following the contradicting statements from Government of Sudan to the report of U.N. John Holmes on Thursday June 11th, Two of the expelled NGOs mentioned in the report, issued a clarification statements. CARE USA and MERCY Corps of Scotland have issued the following statements:

Response to John Holmes' Statement on Expelled Agencies in Sudan

CARE USA wishes to respond to the statements made by John Holmes, the U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, on Thursday June 11, 2009.

Holmes implied in his statement that CARE USA, which was one of the 13 aid agencies expelled from Sudan in March, would be allowed to return to Sudan. This however is not the case. CARE USA’s registration in Sudan remains void, and CARE USA will not resume operations in North Sudan.

Joint Statement on Registration of Mercy Corps Scotland in Northern Sudan
June 12, 2009

Mercy Corps and Mercy Corps Scotland wish to clarify statements made by John Holmes, the U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, on Thursday 11 June 2009 relating to the return of expelled humanitarian relief agencies to Sudan.

Contrary to Mr Holmes’ comments, Mercy Corps, which was expelled from Northern Sudan in early March 2009, is not resuming operations in Northern Sudan. Mercy Corps Scotland, a UK based charity, has registered to work in Sudan. Mercy Corps Scotland is very pleased that the Government of Sudan has approved and welcomed this registration.

Mercy Corps Scotland is an independently registered organization in Scotland, and will be operating separately in Sudan.

- John Holmes of U.N.says Sudan allowed 4 of the 13 expelled NGOs to return to Darfur under different names and brands. Khartoum Government says "that is not true. We told the U.N. General Secretary and the American Special Envoy that the expulsion is final and none of those NGOs will be allowed back in Darfur in any form or under any name".

Please read this strange story as it is unfolding between the U.N. and Khartoum regime:

Sudan Denies Some Expelled NGOs Returning
By Margaret Besheer
The United Nations
11 June 2009

Sudan is denying United Nations claims that some aid groups that were expelled from the country in March are being allowed to return by making slight organizational name changes. The groups were kicked out following the International Criminal Court's issuance of an arrest warrant for President Omar al-Bashir for war crimes.

U.N. humanitarian chief John Holmes told the Security Council Thursday that during his recent visit to Khartoum, government officials made clear to him both in private and in public that new aid groups and those with new names and logos are welcome in the country.

"Four of the expelled NGOs have taken advantage of this latter flexibility and this week completed initial registration processes in Khartoum," he said.

Holmes said the four organizations are CARE International, Save the Children, Mercy Corps and PADCO.

But Sudan's Foreign Affairs Ministry issued a statement Thursday denying that some of the aid groups kicked out of the country would be allowed to return.

Sudan's U.N. Ambassador Abdalmahmood Abdalhaleem Mohamad echoed that, telling VOA that those who have been expelled will not be allowed to circumvent the government's order.

"The people put it like we are throwing them from the window and they are coming from the door, or visa-versa. It is not like this. Those that have been expelled are expelled. They are not being allowed to come back. But whoever would like to apply afresh, credentials will be checked and a decision will be taken on a case-by-case basis," he said.

In March, the International Criminal Court at The Hague issued an arrest warrant for Sudan's president on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity for atrocities committed in the Darfur region of his country since 2003.

President Bashir responded by kicking out 13 of the largest international aid organizations working in Darfur, as well as revoking the licenses of three national NGOs, leaving more than a million people at risk of insufficient food, water, sanitation and healthcare.

Holmes said Sudanese government efforts to fill the most critical gaps have been inadequate, but have for the moment prevented a secondary humanitarian crisis from erupting. But he warned that the looming rainy season could present new challenges.

- GoS ( Government of Sudan) Military Airplanes bombed yesterday the town of Furawiyah in North Darfur. The bombing sent civilians fleeing to the mountains. After the bombing, Janjaweed pillaged the town market and looted some stores. This is the second round for this town to be bombed within the last 10 days.

- Gazi Salahudin ( Consultant of AlBashir who took over the Darfur Dossier from Nafi Ali Nafi), has singled out the U.S. Ambassador to U.N. ( Dr. Susan Rice) in a harsh attack in the media. Gazi Salahudin was referring to Dr. Rice's tough stance in the Security council during and after the delivery of the ICC report by the the ICC chief prosecutor. Salahuddin labeled the call of Dr. Rice for a tougher dealing with the Government of Sudan with regard to Darfur, unfortunate and not helpful in advancing relations between U.S.A. and Sudan.

- Some civilians in North Darfur told Radio Dabanga that they were saved from thirst in past days by some units of JEM rebels when they delivered water to these civilians.
No improvement of humanitarian situation in darfur to be reported till today.

HUMAN NATURE AT ITS BEST

There have been times in my life I have been lifted by what human beings do. Moments when witnessing others being human in most glorious and radiant ways.

It usually has to do with the human spirit shining or something to do with creativity in the arts.

Here is the human spirit being terrific... human beings sending their energy out which in turn creates for us a positive response and a sense of joy and gratitude to be a part of the human race illustrated here....

Darfur and Genocide

Stop Genocide Now just put up their i-ACTzine Issue 10: Mother's Day

There are three actions highlighted in the Mother's Day Issue. In light of Carmen's recent post about "Hey tell Barack about Darfur" you all might want to engage your communities the first action! Here's a glimpse:

Mother's Day is a day we honor the mother's, especially our own mothers, for their love and devotion to their children, and in many cases to the community around them. For the past six years the mothers of Darfur have struggled to remain strong in the face of violence, towards them and their families. Many have survived and many others have died. Many have lost children, and many carried children on their backs across the desert with little to no food or water. Today, as the situation worsens, they face death by starvation and disease.

This Mother's Day, take action to honor the mothers of Darfur, and keep consistent and public pressure on the administration:

1. Families: write an open Mother's Day Card to Michelle Obama. When describing herself, she says, first and foremost, she is Malia and Sasha's mom. The mothers of Darfur need our support, and Mother's Day is the perfect day to honor their strength and advocate for their freedom to live their lives in peace.

Send a copy to the editor of your local paper and ask them to publish it, and one to the First Lady. If you want the card to go to a mother of Darfur, send the original to Stop Genocide Now. Here are a few examples for cards and open letters.

The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW
Washington DC 20500

Stop Genocide Now - The Mothers of Darfur

2. Mothers, sisters, daughters: In solidarity with Darfur survivors, read one or more entries from the collection One Voice: Testimonies of Darfurian Mothers at your place of worship or Mother's Day celebration, with your family, or perform it on a street corner.

3. Everyone: On Mother's Day participate in a global day of Fasting - water only or refugee rations.

Genocide by starvation, diseases and other "passive" means have been done before. It was done on the North American continent to the indigenous people: pbs.org - American Experience - We Shall Remain

Now it is being done to the Darfuris.

"A big lie."

That's what Sudan's ambassador to the United Nations calls a U.N. report that there are "over 1 million people at life-threatening risk" due to the government of Sudan's decision to expel aid groups.

The refugees in Sudan have been cut off from potable water, food and medical attention since March 4, 2009. Meningitis, cholera and diarrhea are spreading in the camps inside the Sudanese borders.

The collective indifference to this human disaster is numbing and stunning.

HOW WOULD YOU DO LIVING IN A REFUGEE CAMP?

DARFURI FAMILIES WITHOUT THEIR HOMES FOR SIX YEARS

Imagine being without electricity. When the electricity goes off for a few hours, it feels like an inconvenience. I reach for the light switch and remember there is no point.

Imagine being without food. Sunday I tried not to eat as a part of solidarity with the Darfuri people. And just because I felt like I couldn't go and get even a cookie, it brought an awareness of what it has to be like for the Darfuris who live day in and day out without the luxury to go to the cupboard or a refrigerator to grab something to answer the need to eat something.

Imagine being without water. No shower. No hand washing. No washing the clothes. Dishes. No water to drink.

Imagine being without plumbing. This would be the worst. No bathroom. It is such a convenience. Just to have your own bathroom. A toilet. Imagine not having a toilet. Ever.

Imagine having nothing.

Imagine not having a pharmacy to go to. Imagine not having a doctor to take your sick child to.

Imagine watching your child dying. Slowly.

Imagine no computers, no TV, no car.

It is hard to imagine.

Darfuri families don't have to imagine. They live it.

Step 3. Start Giving: Visit our online registry make a pledge to support your sister school. You and your class can also use the registry to track progress toward your goal, plan events, and share status updates with family and friends. There are many ways you can raise money to support your sister school. You can have a bake sale, car wash, art auction, concert, or come up with your own fundraiser. Your support will build or repair school buildings, fund teacher training and salaries, as well as buy books, uniforms, sports equipment, and other supplies.

Step 4. Make Connections: Once you receive your welcome package, you will be able to reply to your sister school with a package of your own. You can include videos, pictures, and letters to share your story with the refugees and tell them about your school, community, and your lives. In 3-6 months, you will be able to video blog and share letters with your sister school regularly.

Step 5. Share your Story: Share your story to inspire and encourage others to take action and provide Darfuri refugee children with quality education. Burnt Memories, Family and Path of Dedicated Action
Posted by Katie-Jay on March 30th, 2009

walingWe enter Obama School for Co-education Basic just before classes begin. There is a nice breeze in the mornings, but not quite strong enough to naturally fend off the flies. Young children are filing blue buckets of water and taking them to classrooms. It takes two boys to carry one, but only one girl to carry it on her head. I can feel the harsh air against my skin and down my throat. Glancing to the hills nearby, I notice once again how cloudy the air is. Dust, sand, smoke.

Four students tell us their part of their stories. Sadly, the general themes run the same. None of their villages are standing anymore. The tukuls, markets, fences and possessions are all burned. All of them walked here, 2-3 days at a time, then a rest, then continuing on. They all know someone who was killed. Memories that I don’t think I could bare to talk about without some sort of process, they share as if it is normal.

I remember how upset I once got when my mother told me that my elementary school burned down. I remember taking a day to think of all my memories of the great halls of Coe Elementary with the, tall ceilings, grand staircases that went up four floors and strong wooden doors. My memories of racing on the playground, and of cracking my tooth on the cement are still clear. I was so upset at the news. I cannot even begin to imagine if all of my hometown was burned. Flames would replace memories of holidays, friends, bicycles and evening walks with my mom. How is that we have allowed flames and bloodshed to replace the memories of innocent children of an entire population?

boys thanking .JPG It is late morning and the sun is getting hot, before we break for the hottest part of the day, we visit old friends, Adef and Achta. Once named, Hassan and Hissein, the two twin boys in Level 2 are now Bashar and Bashir. I tickle little Guisma’s tummy and she giggles. I snap pictures of the twins and show them, they laugh and eagerly follow us around with the camera’s hoping to catch a glimpse of themselves. Every so often I flip the view-finder, just to hear their laugh. Abdelmouni, once a very serious little boy, now walks around briskly playing with his brothers and attempting to wrestle Bashar to the ground. It feels so right to be connected to this family, almost as if they are an extension of my own. In many ways, they are.

waling w water to class 3.JPG Yesterday, the Obama Administration met with activist leaders, including John Prendergast, Jerry Fowler and Gloria White-Hammond. This may be a small step in the right direction, but in no way does it mean that we deter from our current path of dedicated, urgent action for Darfur. A meeting, and former President Bush had lots of those, does not change the situation on the ground. It does not bring aid. It does not bring peace. We must keep our actions consistent and on-going, or this meeting will only be lip-service to quiet the movement. Until there is tangible, visible change on the ground, we must be loud. For Adef, Achta, Guisma, Abdelmouni, and the entire population of children whose memories are of burnt homes, death, and displacement, please, please be their voice.

When you feel tired and hopeless, please turn to the voices of the Darfuris themselves. They have confidence in us. We simply cannot let them down.

Peace, ktj

Day 8 Action: Arab League & Get to Know your Senators
Posted by Katie-Jay on March 30th, 2009

Urgent Action 1: The New York Times reported today that “Arab Leaders Unite Behind Bashir”, claiming that the ICC indictment against him is a violation of Sudan’s sovereignty. After spending the last 4 days talking to people who have suffered for 5 years or more as a direct result of this man’s government, news like this is very hard to read. Regardless of the type of government a country has, the opinion of its citizenry has an impact, especially when that opinion is shared by many. If you have friends, relatives or colleagues with links to countries represented in the Arab League, talk to them about Darfur. Point them to the i-ACT website. Share with them the voices of the refugees. TRUTH will prevail.

Action 2: Calling and writing our leaders is important, and provides consistency in our message that we will not accept genocide in Darfur any longer. But we also need to shift our actions to match the urgency necessary to stop the dying in Darfur. We need you and your community to bring Darfur to your Senate office. This would be an opportunity to thank them if they have acted for Darfur and share stories, photos or videos of Darfuris and ask them to be a Darfur advocate. Start to organize a sit-in at your Senators office by taking these easy steps::

1. Look up your Senators, and their offices. Are they on any special committees like Human Rights or Foreign Policy? Get to know their Darfur Score.
2. Discuss the opportunity with your friends, family and community. Gather a list of those who may potentially participate.
3. If you are interested in doing this action, send an email to i-actinfo[at]stopgenocidenow.org.

And as always, please continue to Wake Up, Brush your Teeth, Call your Leaders

PRESIDENT OBAMA - LET'S GO CHANGE THE WORLD - GENOCIDE IS NEVER AT A CONVENIENT TIME FOR THE REST OF US

WHAT DO THE PEOPLE OF DARFUR HAVE TO DO TO GET OUR ATTENTION?

ALL DIE? That is what is happening as we wait. They die of thirst, starvation, sickness, rape, cruelty.... and lack of a world's interest.

COULDN'T WE DO BETTER, MR. PRESIDENT?

IS THE SUDANESE GOVERNMENT EMBOLDENED BY OUR COMPLICITY?

These Darfuri children are holding messages for people of the Unites States.

It seems people think we will help.

The President was on Tonight Show with Jay Leno
March 19, 2009
Pictured: President Obama going by the DARFUR tent in his car while leaving the
NBC studios in Burbank, California.
President Obama waved to tent side of the street - fifteen yards away.

A crowd and the media gathered for Mr. Obama's departure.
Big picture of Darfuri girl pinned under red-lettering of "DARFUR" on the tent.

Remember what campaigner Barack Obama said?:

"Let's Go Change the World."
Well, let's!

He also liked to say:
"Yes, We Can"

and I was there in Nashua High School's gym
to hear that very speech in New Hampshire.

And we CAN.

He also liked to say: "Fired Up and Ready to Go"
It feels like we have to light that fire
and
get him charged ready to go
regarding the dying of Darfuris by our complicity.

There is no better time to act about a genocide than when it is going on.

Ffteen Darfuri men come to the L0s Angeles, California Federal Building. They drove from Phoenix, Arizona. All have families inside of Darfur. One mans mother was forced to journey to Camp Djabal in East Chad, where Gabriel and Katie-Jay will be March 23, 2009, and then into witness protection in Europe. Another Darfuri only hears news from Khartoum. His family is spread through displacement camps and no one in his family has a phone.

But frankly, I must spend my time posting extemely dire things about Darfuri people's lives becoming deaths....

Desperation and Despair for People of Darfur

by Gabriel on March 20th, 2009

Source: http://www.stopgenocidenow.org/

Here are some notes from our Darfuri friend (living in US), Mohamed Yahya, from information he has received from sources inside of Darfur:

  • In camps in Western Darfur such as Al- Geniena, Riyadh, Abuzaid, Kerdang and Dorti the refugee’s lives are in grave danger at this moment. Riyadh and Abuzaid were attacked by the government and the janjaweed the day after the arrest warrant was issued in retaliation for cheering and celebrating upon news of the ICC’s decision. More than 15 lives were lost and 300 homes burnt that day with all survivors driven out of the camps with no place to go.
  • Thousands are fleeing to the Chad border with anywhere from 30,000 to 4 million more refugees expected to follow. All have been met by the Sudanese government guarding the borders, intent on forced starvation in the Darfur desert.
  • After Al-bashir expelled NGOs, the Sudanese government and the janjaweed immediately took over the camps including food stores, medical clinics and water resources. Not only is there a critical lack of water, food and medical attention but there is no milk for the babies. To add to the horror the refugees must stand by and watch their usual rations of food, medicine and shelter sold to the traders in the market. They must starve and fall ill as they watch their lives being sold for the money it is impossible for them to earn.
  • Many refugees in many different camps in Western, Southern and Northern Darfur are reporting the same atrocities. El- fashir camps are being hit especially hard with lack of water the greatest current threat. Families as large as 7 get only one small plastic container of water. Each person gets less than 2 liters a day to drink with no water left over for hygiene purposes such as cleaning or showering not to mention the forced choice to quench ones thirst or cook life sustaining food. The projections for 2 weeks from now are far worse.
  • In South Darfur camps such as Kalma and Domaya disease is already rampant and spreading every day. Meningitis, cholera and diarrhea have infected hundreds already with more on the way. Doctors have left and the few remaining who are treating entire camps are leaving any day. The disaster has already started
  • When asked what the refugees want us to do to help they replied:

“We need water, food, shelter and medicine.”

“We need peace keepers as quickly as possible from America and Europe to protect us.”

“We need America to send International police to arrest Al-bashir and others before they kill us.”

“Every one of them said. ’We will die, we will all die very soon. We are starving, thirsty and sick; Al-bashir will not need bullets to kill us if this situation continues for more than 2 weeks. Please, do something for us, ask Americans, ask President Obama, ask the United Nations.”

They pleaded in broken native languages, making me cry. They allowed me to feel their desperation and need for help. I just couldn’t hold my tears back when I asked one man to describe the situation and he replied “Saab, Saab, Saab Khalis Khalis….” Then he went silent because words could not describe the pain. Instead he said what would roughly translate into English,” The situation is very, very difficult…. No one could possibly imagine.”

March 23rd through April 1, 2009!

From http://www.stopgenocidenow.org/iact/iact7

For 10 consecutive days, i-ACT will connect you with the faces and lives of Darfur refugees who escaped, for now, genocide in their homeland.

Watch videos and view photos from Darfur refugee camps; read journal entries and add your comments; take action daily that will change the way the world responds to genocide. We cannot expect our leaders to STAND UP if we are sitting down.

The violence and insecurity in and around Darfur has escalated since the ICC announced an arrest warrant for Sudan’s President al-Bashir. Thirteen international and three Sudanese aid groups providing life saving services have been expelled from Darfur, leaving 4.7 million without help. Peacekeepers were ambushed and injured yesterday in the region. The Government of Sudan is seizing food, vehicles, files (names and locations) and more from aid organizations. Many believer that Darfuris will begin to cross the border with Chad, seeking help.

i-ACT will take you to the people to hear what they say about Justice and peace. For you to see and understand the situation on the ground. Each day there will be a daily action item and, of course, we will be doing the i-ACTivist Challenge once again! The swiftness of our actions needs to match the urgency on the ground.

We Are All the Keepers of Justice ~ Uploaded by ilovemylifesblog

Text from the youtube post:

The letter to President Obama was written March 12, 2009 and sent through the White House website contact form, as well as, a letter the old-fashioned way through the United States Postal Service.

Although the government of Sudan (GoS) denies it (just like former President Bush denies he condoned illegal torture. However, neither denial makes it any less the truth):
2003 - through to present: Genocide of unarmed Darfuri families is supported by the government of Sudan

March 4, 2009 Judges at The International Criminal Court ordered the arrest of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir with war crimes and crimes against humanity for playing an essential role in the murder, rape, torture, pillage and displacement of large numbers of civilians in Darfur. However, the judges did not charge him with genocide as the prosecutor had requested.

The Sudanese government has long vowed to resist the court, and it summoned several humanitarian organizations to a meeting almost immediately after the warrant was announced.

The British charity Oxfam said that the government had revoked its license to operate, a decision the group said could affect more than 600,000 people. Doctors Without Borders from Holland, which provides health care in one of the worlds biggest camps for displaced people, in South Darfur, was ordered to leave the country.

One aid official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity, because of negotiations to persuade the government to back down, said the following; It happened right after the announcement. The connection was clear.

The government of Sudan began expelling humanitarian aid agencies from Darfur (March 4, 2009). Thirteen to sixteen agencies have been forced out of the region. This expulsion leaves one million Darfuris without water, food and medical assistance.

Obama chooses Sudan envoy, to announce Wednesday

Tue Mar 17, 2009 8:33pm EDT

March 18, 2009
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama is set to name retired Air Force General Scott Gration as his special envoy to Sudan, where he has warned of a worsening crisis following the expulsion of foreign aid organizations.

We Are All the Keepers of Justice.

In Sudan, there is an emergency.

Silence kills in its complicity to killing by treachery.

March 18, 2009

Meningitis is spreading through Darfur IDP camps. Now more than ever immunization is needed in all camps:
1- New cases climbed to 38 cases in Kalma IDP camp (South camp).

2- Nine cases in Kassab IDP camps (North Darfur).

Situation in Zamzam IDP camps is deteriorating rapidly.

1- There are 63,000 new comers since January without any services or registration. They gather on the bare ground of the Camp. They are the first casualties of NGOs expulsion.
2- Water problem is getting worse. some women and children spend close to 11 hours at the pump just to fill one 4-gallon plastic container.
3- Clinics are closed in the camp. Only God knows how acute the health situation in the camp in the absence of NGOs.

The government of Sudan ordered banks in Sudan to freeze bank accounts of 15 NGO's, of which 12 of them were expelled.

The NGO's are:

1- International Rescue Committee - U.S.A.
2- CARE - U.S.A.
3- Save The Children - U.S.A.
4- Save The Children - UK.
5- Development & Rebuilding Org - U.S.A.
6- TATCO - U.S.A.
7- Refugees Council Org.- Norway
8- Khartoum Center for Human Rights- Sudan
