The Only Living Boy in New York

The lyrics of this song include "I get all the news I need in the weather report"

My reason for thinking of this line is that many USA citizens get their news from places that are frivolous and entertaining....The View, Entertainment Tonight, etc. The line in the lyrics above points to the absurdity in how we don't take seriously how we get informed. If indeed, if we do inform ourselves. Nowadays, there is so much to filter. I have watched the campaign since before it began - following Barack Obama in the news, reading his books. Having volunteered for his campaign, I have seen up close how he manages his candidacy. Politics is necessary. We need people to be our representatives and our leaders. To get quality candidates means someone has to be willing to have his/her integrity and his/her family's quality of life be put through the sleaze grinder.

THANK YOU BARACK OBAMA

I believe your interpretation of "I get all the words I need from the weather report" was a little off the mark. I believe Paul Simon was describing the cynical mindset of a young man who was more concerned with his own selfish existence and finding his next meal than reading the NY Times. Of course there could be some symbolism in the lyric but it is not always necessary for someone to read between the lines nor in this case was it the writer's intent to have one do so.

I literally lived the existence of "The Only Living Boy In NY" and relate quite personally to the words, which is why it's possibly my favorite song.

I think I can tell from your picture and your bio that you probably were not born when Simon wrote the song. I am 64 and was living in NYC during that culturally rich period of the '60's and '70's that so influenced Simon's writing and gave historical context to his lyrics for those of us who were part of his early career.

I enjoyed reading your blog. And I'd be honored if you would read mine. Since you are a supporter of President Obama, for whom I voted, you might find my blog thought provoking.
Albie..
