Lopez Lomong Named Darfur Hero

HUMAN RIGHTS GROUPS COMMEND PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES FOR CALLING ON CHINA TO DO MORE TO HELP DARFUR
McCain and Obama both issue statements as Olympic Games begin

Washington, DC – August 8, 2008 – Presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama have issued statements calling on China to do more to help end the genocide in Darfur.

“The world is paying close attention to the way in which Beijing conducts the Olympics as they begin,” said Senator McCain in his statement. “Its relationship to the government in Sudan – including weapons sales to that government – is a matter of legitimate concern to all who care about human rights and ending genocide.” Full statement at http://www.johnmccain.com/mccainreport

Senator Obama said in his statement, “The United States must continue to demand that China bring pressure to bear on Khartoum to stop the genocide in Darfur.” Full statement at
www.barackobama.com/2008/08/08/statement

Earlier this week, a
coalition of national and regional human rights and anti-genocide organizations issued open letters calling for the candidates to speak out for Darfur during the Olympic spotlight. "As presumptive presidential nominees, John McCain and Barack Obama already have tremendous power to influence China and the international community to do more to help end the genocide in Darfur,” stated Susan Morgan, spokesperson for the coalition. “We are pleased that both candidates have spoken out now to put pressure on China to help bring peace to Darfur. Waiting until January 2009 will be too late for countless victims of this humanitarian crisis.”

The candidates’ statements come on the heels of yet another attack on civilians in Darfur by armed horsemen suspected to be Janjaweed militia supported by the government of Khartoum.

According Morgan, China
still has the opportunity to win international respect and be recognized as a true world leader by working to bring security to Darfur. “There would be no greater example of the Olympic spirit at work than for Beijing to use this moment, as host of the Games that represent world peace, to insist that its close partners in the Sudanese regime stop attacking their own unarmed citizens, allow the full UN peacekeeping force to enter Darfur, and engage in a just peace process,” stated Morgan. “China has the power to do this. Beijing could stop sending arms to Sudan and stop protecting Sudan at the United Nations.”

Over the past few weeks, Beijing has been working quietly at the UN to advocating for a 12-month suspension of the ICC investigation of genocide charges against Sudanese President Omar al Bashir. Recent reports also confirm the ongoing military support Beijing is offering to Khartoum and the growing economic relationship.

“The government of China faces a stark choice. Beijing can deliver on its “one world, one dream” promise as Olympic host, and on its professed concern for the people of Darfur — or, Beijing can be recorded in history as the patron, simultaneously, of an Olympics and a genocide,” said Morgan.

According to Jodi Jacobson, Director of Advocacy at American Jewish World Service, China is in a unique position to help end the crisis in Darfur. “China is a permanent member of the
U.N. Security Council, and was acting President when the Security Council approved the UNAMID peacekeeping mission. As such, China has a special responsibility to ensure the full and rapid deployment of a fully equipped peacekeeping force in Darfur. Moreover, as current custodian of the universal values of peace and fraternity represented by the Olympics, China has a special duty to ensure that its actions are consistent with those values,” she stated.

China is Sudan’s leading trade partner in its oil industry thereby providing the Government of Sudan with the economic resources needed to carry out violence against the people of Darfur. For more than a decade, China has also been a major military benefactor of Sudan, including its number one supplier of small arms. A UN report documented that Chinese small arms have regularly been used in Darfur. Lastly, China has also been Sudan’s most important defender in the United Nations, blocking or weakening measures that would compel Sudan to end its violence in Darfur.
