Simon upsets Nadal in Madrid Masters semifinal

MADRID, Spain (AP) — Rafael Nadal was knocked out of the Madrid Masters on Saturday, as Gilles Simon of France rallied to win 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (6) and advance to the final against Andy Murray.

Simon saved 17 break point chances — including seven in the final set — to reach his fourth final of the year after a match lasting nearly 3 1/2 hours.

The fourth-ranked Murray had earlier beaten Roger Federer 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in a rematch of last month's U.S. Open final. That meant Nadal will become the first Spanish player in the Open era to end the year as No. 1.

  1. MAN I was disappointed w/Rafa's loss to Simon. I soooooooo wanted him to win. I wanted him to gain more points on Federer & wanted him to win in Madrid. I've been so bummed about the lose that I've put off reading your blog until now. He's finished 2008 in the #1 position, but those extra points sure would have helped him finish 2009 at #1. Federer seems to be back in form, so I'm a little worried that Rafa won't finish 2009 at #1. We'll have to wait and see. There is no denying that Rafa has had a wonderful year & I need to keep looking at the glass as half full. Thanks for all your updates, and especially all the pictures :-)))))
