DEAR PRESIDENTS OF THE WORLD ~ WHY DO YOU DO NOTHING TO STOP THE DARFUR GENOCIDE?

SILENT NIGHT IN DARFUR

A silent night in a Darfur village is when all the people have been murdered, maimed, had their eyes gouged out, raped, had the whole village burned down and all survivors have run away.

Candles light

To People of Conscience,

If you celebrate Christmas, please, light a special candle for Darfur, Monday evening, December 24th. We ask that you please send this idea on to your friends, family, congregations and organizations…
Please ask all to read the following after lighting a candle of acknowledgement and compassion:

Tonight, as we mark the joy and celebration of Christmas, we are also mindful of the ongoing genocide in Sudan which has entered its fifth year. As we gather together with family and friends, our thoughts and prayers go out to the Darfuri families and communities who are suffering tonight. As many as 400,000 thousand innocent civilians have been killed, hundreds of thousands of others have been victimized and millions have been forced to flee their homes.

On the evening before Christmas day, the holiday of hope and peace on earth and Jesus’ birth, we rededicate ourselves to taking action ~ shining the light of public opinion on this dire situation and calling for an end to genocide.

"Do not stand idly by while your neighbor's blood is being spilled."

* Silent Night sung by Enya

This idea was passed onto me by Mindy Wachtenheim, who spoke at our Providence, Rhode Island Torch Relay October 27, 2007 at the Rhode Island Statehouse. The Jewish community was asked to read a version of the above text after lighting the fifth Hanukkah candle and lighting a special candle for Darfur on Saturday evening, December 8th.

* The origin of the Christmas carol we know as Silent Night was a poem that was written in 1816 by an Austrian priest called Joseph Mohr. On Christmas Eve in 1818 in the small alpine village called Oberndorf it is reputed that the organ at St. Nicholas Church had broken. Joseph Mohr gave the poem of Silent Night (Stille Nacht) to his friend Franz Xavier Gruber and the melody for Silent Night was composed with this in mind. The music to Silent Night was therefore intended for a guitar and the simple score was finished in time for Midnight Mass. Silent Night is the most famous Christmas carol of all time!
